Role: Sr. Appian Developer

Location: Remote

Duration: 12 Months

As an Appian Developer, you will design and build enterprise-scale applications on the Appian low-code platform. You will join a small, focused team modernizing a large regulatory filing system. Your work will focus on interface design, process automation, data modeling, integrations, and performance on a high-traffic, externally facing application.

Position responsibilities

• Application Development: Design, build, and maintain Appian applications, including SAIL interfaces, process models, record types, expression rules, and data types.
• User Experience: Build responsive, user-friendly interfaces for a large, externally facing web application, pushing Appian beyond back-office workflow.
• Data & Integrations: Model data and build integrations with internal and external systems using REST/SOAP web services, connected systems, and SQL databases (PostgreSQL preferred).
• Performance & Scalability: Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks in interfaces, queries, and process models so the application holds up under high user volume.
• Design & Best Practices: Contribute to solution architecture and design reviews. Follow and advocate Appian best practices for reusable components, security, and maintainability.
• Deployment: Package and promote applications across environments using Appian deployment tools and CI/CD pipelines, working with the platform administration team.
• Agile Delivery: Work in sprints with business analysts, QA, and product owners. Estimate work, take part in planning and workshops, and provide production support as needed.
• Documentation: Maintain technical documentation, design notes, and support runbooks for the applications you build.

Essential skills and experience

• Appian Expertise: 5+ years of hands-on Appian development. This must include SAIL interfaces, process models, records, expression rules, and data types on recent Appian versions.
• Enterprise Applications: Has delivered at least one large, multi-user Appian application through full development and production release.
• Integrations: Experience building REST/SOAP integrations and working with relational databases and SQL.
• Performance Tuning: Ability to diagnose slow interfaces, queries, and processes, and to apply Appian performance best practices.
• Agile Delivery: Experience working in Scrum or SAFe teams, using tools such as Jira and Git-based source control.
• Soft Skills: Strong communication and problem-solving skills. Comfortable leading design discussions and workshops with business and technical stakeholders.

Minimum Required Experience: 5+ years of Appian development.

Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Preferred qualifications

• Certifications: Appian Certified Senior Developer or Appian Certified Lead Developer. Appian Certified Associate Developer at a minimum.
• Customer-Facing Apps: Experience building Appian applications for external users, such as portals or public-facing sites, beyond internal workflow.
• Regulated Industries: Background in insurance, financial services, government, or other regulated environments. Experience with regulatory filing or case management is a plus.
• Modernization Projects: Experience moving a legacy system onto Appian, or rescuing a project that is behind schedule.
• Extended Skills: Java for Appian plug-ins, JavaScript, and Appian RPA or AI features.
• Consulting Background: Prior consulting work, either with Appian partner firms or Appian Professional Services, is strongly preferred.
