We are seeking licensed attorneys to serve as Contractor Associate General Counsel for the Tennessee Department of Health (DOH). This role supports the state's initiative to strengthen rural healthcare infrastructure by prosecuting disciplinary cases against healthcare licensees practicing across Tennessee’s 89 rural counties and representing the Department in administrative law proceedings before health-related boards.

- Location: Nashville, TN 37243 (665 Mainstream Drive)
- Work Arrangement: Hybrid (requires weekly in-office attendance; 37.5 hours per week)
- Residency Requirement: Candidates must be current Tennessee residents or have established TN residency prior to the start date.
- Role Type: Long-Term Contract (10/12/2026 – 09/30/2030; contractor role not eligible for state benefits)

- Special Requirements: Active TN Bar License Number and a writing sample (10 pages max) must be submitted with the application. The candidate must obtain professional liability insurance prior to start.
Key Responsibilities
- Administrative Litigation: Represent the Department of Health in administrative disciplinary proceedings, formal trials, discovery, and motion practice before licensing boards.
- Investigative Support: Partner with Department investigators and licensing board consultants to review complaints and inspect evidence against healthcare practitioners in rural counties.
- Settlement Negotiation: Negotiate resolutions, consent orders, and agreed dispositions with licensees found in violation of state practice acts.
- Caseload Management: Maintain and prioritize an active, robust litigation docket across all stages of enforcement.
- Legislative & Policy Analysis: Assist leadership with special projects, rural healthcare delivery initiatives, and legislative bill analysis as assigned.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Licensure: Juris Doctor (JD) degree with an active license in good standing with the Tennessee State Bar (TN Bar License # required).
- Litigation Experience: 1+ years of relevant legal experience with hands-on litigation exposure, including hearing or trial preparation and motion practice.
- Residency: Must physically reside in Tennessee (or complete relocation establishing TN residency before day one).
- Insurance Requirement: Willingness and ability to secure personal professional liability insurance prior to starting.

Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in administrative law, healthcare regulatory compliance, medical licensing boards, or public sector legal representation.
