  • Location: Mostly remote (Telford 2 days onsite per month)

Job Description

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is fundamentally transforming the UK tax system to use digitally integrated tools, forming a key part of the government's ambition for our client to become one of the most digitally advanced tax authorities in the world. MTD makes it easier for businesses, self-employed individuals and landlords to get their tax right first time by integrating tax into their day-to-day business activities through software and digital tools, creating a single, up-to-date view of a customer's tax affairs in one modern, robust IT system.

We're hiring Scala Play developers to join a dynamic team building solutions for public sector clients, within a mature Agile environment working alongside specialists from development and other disciplines. This means delivering user-centric digital services end-to-end on high-performance cloud platforms, using emerging languages and technologies as part of self-empowered, multi-disciplined teams with the freedom to shape ways of working to the latest industry practices. Continuous improvement runs through both working practices and technical approach, with team members' knowledge and experience directly shaping how solutions are built. Beyond the immediate team, engineers are part of several communities spread across multiple sites, providing a wider network to share ideas and get support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver user stories as part of a multi-disciplined Agile team
  • Build, deploy and support Scala Play microservices, working closely with user researchers and designers
  • Apply well-established software development techniques such as TDD and pair programming
  • Get involved across all stages of service delivery - configuring, deploying and monitoring using industry-standard tooling, working in a DevOps capacity
  • Contribute to problem solving, business analysis, quality assurance, application design and architecture alongside core Scala development
  • Participate in and help shape wider engineering communities, sharing ideas and driving continuous improvement in tools and technologies

Skills and Experience Required

  • Strong technical competence in Scala
  • Strong technical competence in Play
  • Unit testing and integration testing

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with cloud-based infrastructure
  • Understanding of application security principles
  • Understanding of continuous integration and continuous delivery
  • Well-rounded Agile developer skills - problem solving, business analysis, quality assurance, application design and architecture
  • Strong communication skills and a professional, approachable manner
