Job Description

About This Role

Ready to shape the future of manufacturing? As an Additive Manufacturing Engineering Co-op at Rennscot MFG, you'll be at the forefront of additive manufacturing technology while building a comprehensive skill set across advanced manufacturing processes. This hands-on role puts you in the center of our additive manufacturing operations, where you'll work with cutting-edge 3D printing technologies, optimize build processes, and support post-processing workflows.

What You'll Do

  • Support Additive Manufacturing Operations

    • Plan, setup, and execute additive manufacturing builds using industrial 3D printing systems

    • Optimize build orientation, support structures, and process parameters for quality and efficiency

    • Post-process additively manufactured parts including support removal, heat treatment, and media blasting

    • Troubleshoot build failures and drive continuous improvement in additive processes

    • Develop and refine manufacturing processes for new additive technologies and materials

  • Engineer Better Processes

    • Design and fabricate work holding fixturing for post processing additive components

    • Contribute to process development, refininf build layouts, and support removal strategies for improved quality

    • Participate in root cause analysis and corrective action for production issues

    • Document manufacturing processes, build parameters, and setup procedures for repeatability

  • General Support

    • Support other departments (e.g., Quality, Subtractive Manufacturing, Assembly) as needed based on business demand

    • Attend team meetings and contribute actively to discussions, bringing a fresh perspective and a willingness to learn

    • Complete an end-of-term summary documenting key contributions, lessons learned, and recommended improvements for handoff to the engineering team.

    • Support other projects and assignments as needed.

What We're Looking For

  • You've Got the Foundation

    • Currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor's Degree program in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.

    • Interest in additive manufacturing technologies and processes

    • Familiarity with CAD software (Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or similar)

    • Exposure to Build preparation software (Bambu Studio, Magics, 3DXpert, nTop, PreForm)

    • Strong attention to detail and eagerness to learn

    • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively

  • Bonus Points If You Have

    • Experience with additive manufacturing systems (FDM, SLA, SLS, metal printing, etc.)

    • Knowledge of additive design principles and topology optimization

    • Experience with additive post-processing techniques

Who You Are - Skills & Abilities

  • Future-focused – You're excited about how additive manufacturing is transforming industry

  • Technically curious – You want to understand both the art and science of manufacturing

  • Hands-on learner – You'd rather build and iterate than just read about it

  • Process-minded – You see manufacturing as a system and love optimizing it

  • Problem-solver – When a build fails or a process breaks down, you're energized to figure out why

  • Detail-oriented – You know that parameters matter and documentation prevents problems

  • Cross-functional – You're comfortable moving between additive, subtractive, and other manufacturing processes

  • Improvement-driven – You're always asking "how can we make this better?"

  • Adaptable – You thrive in a dynamic environment where priorities shift and technologies evolve

  • Collaborative – You work well with machinists, engineers, and other team members to get results
