Job Description

FIELD SERVICE ENGINEER – MECHANICAL / INDUSTRIAL MACHINERY

Location: Ipswich, Suffolk
Salary: £45,000 per annum + Overtime + Overnight Allowance
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Employment: Permanent, Full-Time
Travel: UK-wide with occasional international assignments

THE OPPORTUNITY

We are recruiting for an experienced Field Service Engineer to join an established British engineering and manufacturing company specialising in industrial processing and size-reduction machinery.

This is an excellent opportunity for a mechanically biased engineer with a strong background in industrial maintenance, machinery installation, servicing and fault-finding.

The position will involve working on specialist industrial equipment, both at the company's facilities and at customer sites throughout the UK, with occasional opportunities for international travel.

The successful candidate must live within a reasonable commuting distance of Ipswich and be comfortable travelling as required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Carry out installation, servicing, maintenance and repair of industrial processing machinery.
  • Diagnose and rectify mechanical faults, ensuring equipment is returned to safe and efficient operation.
  • Work on mechanical components including bearings, shafts, gears, drives, rollers and associated machinery.
  • Undertake planned preventative and reactive maintenance activities.
  • Assist with machinery installation, assembly, testing and commissioning.
  • Carry out mechanical adjustments, component replacement and machinery overhauls.
  • Interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Liaise professionally with customers, providing technical support and advice.
  • Complete service reports and maintain accurate records of work undertaken.
  • Travel to customer sites throughout the UK and occasionally overseas.
  • Ensure all engineering activities comply with relevant health and safety procedures.

EXPERIENCE & REQUIREMENTS

  • Previous experience as a Field Service Engineer, Mechanical Maintenance Engineer, Service Technician or similar.
  • Strong mechanical engineering background, ideally within industrial machinery or manufacturing environments.
  • Practical experience maintaining and repairing rotating machinery and mechanical drive systems.
  • Good knowledge of bearings, shafts, gears, motors, conveyors and associated mechanical components.
  • Ability to diagnose faults and carry out repairs independently.
  • Experience with machinery installation and commissioning would be advantageous.
  • Electrical fault-finding or general electrical knowledge would be beneficial.
  • Strong communication skills and a professional, customer-focused approach.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the UK and internationally when required.
  • Must live within a commutable distance of Ipswich.

Experience working with hammer mills, roller mills, milling equipment, bulk material handling systems or other industrial processing machinery would be particularly advantageous, although engineers from other heavy industrial or manufacturing backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

SALARY & BENEFITS

  • Basic Salary: £45,000 per annum.
  • Working Hours: 37.5 hours per week.
  • Overtime: Paid at 1.5 times the standard hourly rate, subject to prior agreement.
  • Overnight Rate: £30 per hour, subject to the company's applicable arrangements.
  • Employment: Permanent PAYE position.
  • International Travel: Occasional overseas assignments depending on project requirements, typically lasting one to two weeks at a time.

International travel is project-dependent rather than a continuous requirement. The company currently has overseas projects involving Africa and the USA, although travel to these locations is not necessarily imminent.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

We are particularly interested in speaking with mechanically biased engineers who enjoy hands-on problem-solving and have experience working with heavy industrial machinery.

Candidates from manufacturing, food processing, agricultural machinery, materials handling, quarrying, milling, packaging or general industrial maintenance backgrounds may have highly transferable skills.

This position would suit an experienced engineer looking for a long-term opportunity with an established engineering manufacturer, offering a varied workload, customer interaction and the opportunity to work on specialist machinery both in the UK and internationally.
