The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join a growing team within the building services sector. This is an excellent opportunity for an established engineering professional looking to take on a more senior, management-focused position, combining technical leadership, project management and client relationship development.

This is a fully remote opportunity, offering the flexibility to work from home while taking ownership of project delivery and leading mechanical design across a varied portfolio of building services projects.

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing multiple projects simultaneously, typically overseeing two or three projects at any one time. You will take ownership of project programmes, budgets, resources and deliverables, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within scope and to the highest technical standards.

You will also act as a key point of contact for clients, lead multidisciplinary coordination and provide mentorship to junior engineers, helping to develop the wider team and maintain consistently high standards of engineering delivery.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage multiple mechanical building services projects, typically overseeing two or three projects concurrently.
• Take overall responsibility for project delivery, including programmes, resources, budgets, deadlines and technical quality.
• Manage client relationships, acting as the primary point of contact and maintaining strong communication throughout the project lifecycle.
• Lead mechanical design from initial concept and feasibility through to detailed design, construction and project completion.
• Oversee the design of HVAC systems, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning and associated plant installations.
• Manage project workloads, delegate responsibilities and ensure resources are allocated effectively across projects.
• Chair and attend client meetings, design reviews and multidisciplinary coordination meetings.
• Coordinate mechanical design activities with electrical, public health, architectural and structural teams.
• Review and approve technical calculations, specifications, drawings, reports and design packages.
• Monitor project progress, identify potential risks and implement solutions to keep projects on programme and within scope.
• Provide technical leadership, mentoring and professional development support to junior and intermediate engineers.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant British Standards, Building Regulations and industry best practice.
• Support commercial project management, including monitoring scope changes, identifying additional services and managing client expectations.
• Contribute to improving design processes, technical standards and overall project delivery.
• Work collaboratively with senior management to support business growth, client retention and the successful delivery of projects.

Requirements

• Extensive experience in mechanical design within the building services industry. Residential Experience is a requirement.
• Previous experience operating at Senior or Principal Mechanical Design Engineer level, with responsibility for leading projects and managing client relationships.
• Demonstrable experience managing multiple projects simultaneously, ideally two or three at a time.
• Strong project management skills, including programme management, resource planning, workload allocation and delivery.
