Senior Firmware Engineer
Byron Bay - Hybrid
140-150K+Super

The Opportunity

Develop embedded firmware for cutting-edge electric hydrofoil technology, working across firmware, electronics and connected systems to help deliver innovative products from the engineering lab to the water.

The Role

You'll take ownership of firmware development across embedded devices and systems.The role will span the full product development lifecycle - from detailed software design and implementation through to testing, troubleshooting and real-world validation.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Take technical ownership of embedded firmware development across existing and future hydrofoil products.
  • Design, develop, test, verify and maintain embedded firmware in C/C++.
  • Develop firmware across flight controllers, receivers, Bluetooth devices, battery systems and other connected embedded systems.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex firmware, hardware, RF, wireless communication and system-level issues.
  • Work closely with electronics and hardware engineers to deliver robust software/hardware integration.
  • Contribute to features across firmware and associated app, production and test tools.
  • Develop robust unit testing and design-for-test approaches to improve firmware quality and reliability.
  • Manage configuration, compatibility and software versioning, including forward and backward compatibility.
  • Participate in on-water and off-water testing, using real-world product behaviour to refine performance and reliability.
  • Contribute to code reviews, technical discussions and GitLab development workflows.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to other engineers across the firmware development process.
  • Help establish and maintain software development standards, methodologies and engineering best practices.
  • Investigate and resolve issues across firmware, hardware, wireless communications and connected systems.
  • Work collaboratively across Firmware, Electronics, App, Cloud, Product Development and Engineering teams.
  • Identify opportunities to improve platform stability, maintainability, performance and the overall customer experience.
  • Contribute to the technical evolution of the product and help strengthen firmware capability across the engineering function.
About You

We're looking for a senior firmware engineer who enjoys working on real, physical products and getting into the detail of how software, electronics and hardware come together.

You'll ideally have:

  • 5-10+ years' experience in firmware, embedded software or equivalent industry experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience developing embedded software in C/C++.
  • Experience developing firmware for physical, hardware-based products.
  • Strong understanding of embedded systems and software/hardware interaction.
  • Experience with RF, Bluetooth, wireless communications and associated protocols.
  • Experience with unit testing, verification and design-for-test.
  • Understanding of configuration management and forward/backward compatibility.
  • Experience working with Git/GitLab and structured software development workflows.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, particularly when troubleshooting complex system-level issues.
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to provide technical guidance to other engineers.
  • A degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
Desirable Experience:
  • NRF528xx, Atmel ARM or STM32
  • Flutter/Dart, Python or C#
  • MIPI DSI
  • Altium or LTSpice
  • Digital, analogue, power, RF or battery management systems
  • Li-ion battery systems
  • Connected devices / IoT
  • Marine or watercraft products
  • Full product development lifecycle experience
