Job Description

Deputy Controller – Health Plan

Compensation
Salary Range: $160,000 – $174,313 per year
Location: New York, NY
Hybrid – 2 days per week in the NYC office / 3 days remote
Position Summary
A large, well-established health plan is seeking an experienced Deputy Controller to oversee statutory accounting, financial reporting, regulatory reporting, and technical accounting functions. This leadership role partners across Finance to ensure accurate financial reporting, support internal and external audits, maintain regulatory compliance, and provide technical accounting guidance.
The Deputy Controller will also lead process improvement initiatives, enhance financial reporting efficiencies, develop accounting policies and procedures, and monitor emerging accounting standards that impact the organization.
Responsibilities
  • Full-time hybrid schedule (2 days per week in the NYC office / 3 days remote).
  • Prepare monthly statutory financial statements, quarterly schedules, annual statutory, GAAP and GASB financial statements, and required regulatory filings.
  • Lead external audits, internal audit responses, Model Audit Rule compliance, account reconciliations, and technical accounting research.
  • Develop accounting policies and procedures, coordinate with external auditors and third-party administrators, and support system implementations.
  • Identify process improvements, prepare technical accounting memoranda, and perform special projects as assigned.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience within the health insurance or managed care industry.
  • Strong knowledge of statutory accounting, GAAP, SSAP, GASB, audited financial statements, regulatory reporting, PeopleSoft (or comparable ERP), and advanced Microsoft Excel.
  • CPA preferred but not required.
