Network Engineer

Description
We are looking for an experienced Engineer, Optical Transport & Wavelength Services to support an enterprise company in Englewood, CO for a long term contract opportunity. The Senior Engineer is a hands-on optical transport professional responsible for the turn-up, commissioning, and delivery of new photonic spans and wavelength services across a multi-vendor network. This role owns projects from readiness review through production acceptance, ensuring optical performance, service reliability, and successful customer activation. The engineer works closely with field technicians, network operations, vendors, and internal engineering teams to validate designs, provision services, troubleshoot issues, and support backbone network stability.
Key Responsibilities
Photonic Span Deployment & Commissioning

• Lead photonic span turn-ups, including readiness reviews, equipment validation, fiber-path verification, and field coordination.
• Configure and commission optical line-system components, including ROADMs, amplifiers, Raman systems, mux/demux equipment, and supervisory channels.
• Validate optical performance, optimize span health, and document all turn-up and as-built information.

Wavelength Service Provisioning

• Provision and activate wavelength services across Nokia and Ciena optical transport platforms.
• Configure transport equipment and ensure service continuity across multi-vendor environments.
• Maintain accurate service records, circuit documentation, and implementation details.

Testing, Troubleshooting & Service Assurance

• Perform service validation, acceptance testing, and production readiness verification.
• Troubleshoot fiber, optical, and service-layer issues using OTDR analysis, optical testing, and performance data.
• Coordinate with field teams and vendors to resolve impairments and deliver production-ready services.

Operational Execution

• Execute work in accordance with engineering standards, operational procedures, and customer acceptance requirements.
• Support service turn-up through production handoff while maintaining accurate engineering and service documentation.

Continuous Improvement

• Identify opportunities to improve and automate design, provisioning, testing, and documentation processes.
• Contribute to operational procedures, MOPs, and best practices supporting backbone wavelength delivery.

Requirements
Required Qualifications
10+ years of experience engineering, commissioning, provisioning, or supporting DWDM and optical transport networks in carrier or large-scale service provider environments.
Strong knowledge of optical transport technologies, including DWDM, ROADMs, optical amplification, Raman systems, OSNR, dispersion, span loss, and optical power budgets.
Hands-on experience commissioning photonic spans and troubleshooting optical services across one or more optical transport platforms.
Proven ability to partner with field technicians to isolate physical-layer issues and restore fiber-based transport services.
Experience interpreting OTDR traces and converting test results into effective troubleshooting and remediation actions.
Strong communication and documentation skills, with the ability to collaborate across operations, engineering, field services, and vendor support teams.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Nokia 1830 PSS, PSD, PSI-M, and related optical transport platforms.
Experience with Ciena 6500, Waveserver, and RLS optical transport platforms.
Background commissioning photonic spans within backbone or large-scale service provider networks.
Hands-on experience with OTDR testing, optical power meters, optical spectrum analysis, and fiber acceptance testing tools.
Experience performing photonic span acceptance, optical service turn-up, customer acceptance testing, and production implementations.
