Data Governance Lead
Location: Mountain View, CA – Onsite
Job Type: Contract
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Data Governance Lead to join the Finance Data, Automation & AI organization.
Reporting to the Director of Finance Data, Automation & AI, this role will lead the data governance foundation supporting Finance transformation. As Finance modernizes its planning, reporting, and ERP platforms through the Unified Plan to Perform program—and as AI capabilities move from pilots into production workflows—the success of these initiatives depends on trusted, well-defined, traceable, and secure data.
This is a senior individual contributor role for a strategic and technically strong data professional who can establish governance policies while also building the frameworks, processes, and technical foundations required to operationalize them.
The Data Governance Lead will establish and scale Finance's governance and stewardship model, embed governance into platform modernization initiatives, and help drive emerging capabilities such as synthetic data for secure testing, development, analytics, and AI/ML use cases.
The role will work closely with Finance, Technology, Enterprise Data, Risk & Compliance, Legal, and Security teams and will represent Finance in enterprise-level data governance and strategy initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Data Governance & Stewardship
  • Own and evolve the Finance data governance framework, including data definitions, quality standards, stewardship models, ownership, and access controls across Finance data domains.
  • Establish clear data ownership, accountability, and decision rights for critical Finance datasets.
  • Develop and maintain governance standards, policies, processes, and operating models that support trusted and compliant Finance data.
  • Partner with business and technology stakeholders to establish consistent definitions and standards for critical Finance data and metrics.
Data Lineage & Data Mapping
  • Build and maintain a comprehensive Finance data map covering data sources, systems, data flows, transformations, and critical data elements.
  • Establish and maintain data lineage so Finance metrics and critical datasets can be traced back to authoritative sources.
  • Use data maps and lineage as key references for access management, risk assessment, audit, architecture, and governance decisions.
  • Partner with Enterprise Data and Technology teams to maintain accurate and actionable data catalogs and lineage information.
Finance Platform Modernization
  • Lead the data governance, data mapping, reconciliation, and ownership strategy for Finance ERP and planning platform migrations.
  • Ensure data ownership, lineage, definitions, quality standards, and SOX-relevant controls are established in the target environment rather than simply replicated from legacy systems.
  • Partner with Finance and Technology teams to identify data risks, gaps, dependencies, and reconciliation requirements throughout modernization initiatives.
  • Ensure governance requirements are incorporated into platform design and implementation from the beginning.
Synthetic Data Strategy
  • Define and lead Finance's synthetic data strategy for testing, development, analytics, and AI/ML model training.
  • Identify use cases where synthetic data can safely replace sensitive production data.
  • Establish standards for synthetic data fidelity, validation, privacy, and usability.
  • Partner with Engineering and AI/ML teams to develop reusable synthetic data pipelines, processes, and tooling.
  • Ensure synthetic data practices align with security, privacy, compliance, and governance requirements.
Data Controls, Risk & Compliance
  • Partner with Technology, Enterprise Data, Risk & Compliance, Legal, and Security teams to design effective data access and sensitive-data handling controls.
  • Ensure Finance data governance practices support SOX/ICFR, privacy, security, and regulatory requirements.
  • Balance appropriate data controls with business usability and operational efficiency.
  • Identify data governance risks and drive remediation with accountable stakeholders.
Enterprise Data Strategy
  • Represent Finance in enterprise data governance forums and strategic data initiatives.
  • Align Finance data standards, policies, and governance practices with enterprise-wide data strategy and governance frameworks.
  • Ensure Finance requirements and priorities are incorporated into company-wide data decisions.
  • Influence senior stakeholders across Finance and Technology on data governance, architecture, quality, and strategy.
Data Capability & Innovation
  • Develop and own the roadmap for Finance data governance and capability maturity.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and capabilities such as AI-driven data quality, automated lineage, federated access, and intelligent governance.
  • Serve as a strategic thought partner to Finance leadership, providing recommendations on data investments, priorities, and future capabilities.
  • Identify opportunities to improve data quality, accessibility, trust, automation, and business value.
Required Qualifications
  • 8+ years of experience in data governance, data strategy, data architecture, or a related discipline.
  • 2–3+ years operating at a Principal, Lead, or strategic level with responsibility for enterprise data initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience establishing, implementing, or scaling data governance and data stewardship programs.
  • Experience governing data through a large legacy-to-cloud platform migration, with emphasis on data ownership, lineage, governance, reconciliation, and controls rather than technical migration execution alone.
  • Hands-on experience building or managing enterprise data maps, data catalogs, and data lineage capabilities.
  • Strong technical understanding of SQL and modern data warehouse platforms such as Snowflake, BigQuery, or similar technologies.
  • Experience working in a regulated or controls-sensitive environment, preferably with SOX/ICFR exposure.
  • Proven ability to influence enterprise-level data strategy and work effectively with senior business and technology stakeholders.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Finance, Business, or a related field.
  • Advanced degree and/or relevant professional certifications is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience with synthetic data generation, masking, validation, and governance techniques.
  • Experience with Oracle ERP or EPM environments.
  • Strong understanding of Finance data models, including Chart of Accounts, master data, financial hierarchies, and related Finance data structures.
  • Experience supporting Finance, Accounting, FP&A, or financial transformation functions within a large, matrixed enterprise.
  • Experience with AI/ML data readiness, data products, or modern data platform initiatives.
  • Exposure to federated data governance and decentralized data ownership models.
  • Experience implementing automated data quality, lineage, cataloging, and governance capabilities.
