Criminal Defense Attorney

• The Opportunity*

Mayhew Law is hiring a full-time Criminal Defense Attorney for our Reno office. Handle misdemeanor and felony cases from consultation through resolution, with meaningful courtroom experience, mentorship, and support from a collaborative team.
This is an in-office position with required court appearances. An active Nevada bar license in good standing is required. We prefer two or more years of criminal law experience, but newer licensed attorneys with strong research, writing, and advocacy skills are encouraged to apply.

• Compensation and Benefits*
• Annual base salary of $110,000–$140,000, depending on relevant experience and qualifications.
• 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision premiums for the employee.

• What You’ll Do*
• Manage assigned criminal defense cases involving misdemeanor and felony charges.
• Conduct client consultations and explain legal options, strategy, and case developments.
• Review discovery, analyze evidence, and identify factual and legal issues.
• Conduct legal research and draft motions, briefs, and other court filings.
• Develop and implement defense strategies in collaboration with the firm’s attorneys.
• Negotiate with prosecutors and advise clients regarding plea offers and other potential resolutions.
• Represent clients at arraignments, hearings, trials, sentencing, and other court proceedings.
• Prepare clients and witnesses for hearings and trial.
• Coordinate with legal support staff to keep cases organized and clients informed.
• Maintain accurate case records and meet court deadlines.
• Travel to court appearances in Reno, Sparks, Carson City, Douglas County, and Lyon County as required by assigned matters.

Assignments and responsibility will reflect your experience, with mentorship available as you develop your criminal defense practice.

• Required Qualifications*
• Active Nevada bar license in good standing.
• Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
• Effective oral advocacy and professional communication.
• Sound judgment and a commitment to ethical, client-centered representation.
• Ability to manage deadlines and take ownership of assigned matters.
• Clear, compassionate communication with clients.
• A collaborative approach to working with attorneys and support staff.
• Availability for full-time, in-office work in Reno and required court appearances.
• Preferred Experience*

Two or more years of criminal law experience, including experience with hearings, motion practice, plea negotiations, or trials. Newer Nevada-licensed attorneys will also be considered.
