Job Description

Principal Functional Safety & Cyber Security Engineer

UK| Hybrid & flexible working

Birmingham

£75,000

In a nutshell, you're there to make sure the product being designed is both safe and secure.

Day to day, work alongside the systems, hardware and software engineers, reviewing designs and requirements and asking two main questions: 'What could go wrong?' and 'How do we design it so that it doesn't?'

HARA/TARA/FMEA/FTA/FMEDA analyses, reviewing safety and cybersecurity requirements, checking designs against ISO 26262 and ISO 21434, discussing issues with engineers/suppliers, documenting findings, recommending changes, and joining customer reviews.

You're the safety and cybersecurity expert sitting across the engineering teams, making sure the system is designed correctly, risks are identified early, and the finished product meets the required automotive safety and security standards.

We're looking for an experienced Principal Functional Safety & Cyber Security Engineer to join a growing engineering team working on complex, safety-critical products.

This is a senior, hands-on engineering role where you'll work across Systems, Hardware and Software, helping ensure products meet demanding functional safety and cyber security requirements.

You'll work closely with engineering teams, customers and external suppliers, contributing from initial concept and analysis through to design and validation.

The Role

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering engineering activities within ISO 26262 and ISO 21434 frameworks
  • Developing and reviewing functional safety and cyber security concepts and requirements
  • Performing safety, security and failure analysis including HARA, TARA, FMEA, FTA and DFA
  • Translating analysis findings into clear technical, hardware and software requirements
  • Supporting hardware reliability studies, including FMEDA and fault metric calculations
  • Working with safety metrics including SPFM, LPF/LFM and PMHF
  • Collaborating across Systems, Hardware and Software engineering teams
  • Working closely with component engineers, suppliers and customers
  • Supporting customer design and functional safety reviews
  • Ensuring engineering work products comply with relevant processes, legislation, regulations and standards
  • Delivering technical activities against agreed project milestones

What We're Looking For

You'll ideally have a degree or equivalent qualification in Systems Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline, alongside substantial experience within functional safety, product cyber security or safety-critical engineering.

We're particularly interested in candidates with experience of:

  • ISO 26262 Functional Safety
  • ISO 21434 / ISO/SAE 21434 Cyber Security
  • HARA and/or TARA
  • FMEA, FTA, DFA and FMEDA
  • Systems engineering and requirements management
  • Requirements capture through to design validation
  • Hardware and/or software verification
  • Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)
  • Embedded systems, processors, microcontrollers and silicon devices
  • Hardware safety mechanisms and fault metrics

Experience with ASPICE, ISO 15288, APQP or ISO 9001 would also be advantageous.

Consultancy experience, exposure to multiple industry sectors or previous involvement in implementing functional safety and cyber security frameworks would be particularly valuable.

Why Apply?

This is an opportunity to take a senior role at the intersection of functional safety, embedded systems and product cyber security, working across the complete engineering lifecycle.

You'll have the opportunity to influence safety and security practices, work directly with customers and engineering specialists, and contribute to technically challenging projects across multiple domains.
