Scope of Work:
This Design Engineer role offers a hands-on opportunity to support the design, analysis, and delivery of electric distribution projects for utility clients, including Commonwealth Edison and other Exelon operating companies.
This role is ideal for a motivated engineer with foundational utility experience who is ready to take on increased responsibility in a client-facing consulting environment while continuing to grow technically and professionally and for someone with a passion for engineering, strong technical skills, and a commitment to delivering high-quality design work on real-world projects.
This position is mostly remote with occasional in-office or on-site responsibilities, located in either Shorewood, IL.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform design and engineering of overhead and underground distribution systems, typically 4 kV to 34 kV.
Support system studies, including load flow, voltage drop, short circuit, and protection coordination analyses.
Assist with execution of projects for Commonwealth Edison and other Exelon operating companies.
Interpret and apply client-specific standards, specifications, design criteria, and engineering practices.
Support distribution planning, capacity analysis, reliability improvements, and infrastructure upgrade efforts.
Coordinate with utility clients, municipalities, field teams, and internal project teams.
Prepare, check, and review engineering deliverables for quality, accuracy, and compliance.
Contribute to continuous improvement of internal engineering standards, templates, and best practices.
Complies with established company work rules, policies, and procedures.
Actively engages with other members of the company to continuously strive to improve processes, create efficiencies, reduce costs, and increase profitability.
Cooperatively takes on other duties, roles, or responsibilities, as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Experience in overhead and/or underground distribution system design.
Working knowledge of utility standards, engineering practices, and design documentation requirements.
Experience with power system analysis tools such as CYME, Synergi, ETAP, or similar platforms.
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work directly with clients and internal stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience supporting Commonwealth Edison or similar investor-owned utilities.
Familiarity with Exelon operating companies such as PECO, BGE, and Pepco.
Knowledge of the Illinois utility regulatory environment.
Experience with Distributed Energy Resource (DER) interconnections, including solar, storage, and EV infrastructure.
Exposure to grid modernization initiatives, including automation, smart grid, and reliability programs.
Experience with urban underground or network distribution systems.
Familiarity with utility GIS and work management systems.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field (required).
Professional Engineer (PE) license required (Illinois preferred)
5+ years of experience in electric utility, power delivery, or utility consulting environments.
