Manager of AI Engineering (Patient Experience)
Location: Charlotte, North Carolina (Hybrid)
Role Overview
This organization is seeking a technically strong and delivery-focused leader to guide the development of enterprise AI, cloud, and software solutions supporting patient experience. This leadership position combines architectural oversight with people management, requiring a robust understanding of Epic systems, workflows, integrations, and healthcare data. The successful candidate will guide architecture, conduct code reviews, and lead engineering teams building modern, AI-enabled healthcare applications.
Key Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a team of software engineers, fostering innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
• Oversee the design and delivery of AI and cloud-based solutions that integrate with or support Epic workflows, applications, and healthcare data.
• Provide technical leadership across LLM-based applications, AI agents, RAG pipelines, APIs, and enterprise software solutions.
• Partner with clinical, operational, product, and technology teams to ensure solutions align with existing workflows and the broader healthcare technology ecosystem.
• Guide architectural decisions and conduct code reviews while maintaining hands-on technical depth.
• Establish and enforce engineering best practices for code quality, security, reliability, and operations within a regulated healthcare environment.
• Manage agile delivery processes and engineering metrics to ensure accountability for timelines and quality.
• Oversee solutions operating in a HIPAA-regulated environment, ensuring appropriate controls for data privacy, security, and PHI.

Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
Experience: Ten or more years of software engineering experience, including at least two to three years of direct people management experience. Hands-on experience working within an Epic environment is required, specifically supporting, integrating with, or developing technology solutions that interact with Epic systems, workflows, or data. Healthcare industry experience within a provider or payer environment is also required.
Technical Skills: Proven technical depth with the ability to review code, guide architecture, and provide technical direction to engineering teams. Production experience delivering AI or machine learning solutions, including LLM-based applications, NLP solutions, AI agents, or RAG pipelines, is required. Strong Microsoft Azure experience across compute, data, identity, integration, and monitoring services is essential, along with proficiency in Python and experience with at least one additional language such as Java, TypeScript, or Go.
Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Epic patient-facing or interoperability technologies and workflows, such as MyChart, Cheers, Healthy Planet, Epic APIs, FHIR, or related capabilities.
• Experience with Azure OpenAI, Azure AI Foundry, and agent orchestration frameworks such as LangGraph.
• Background in contact center technology, IVR, conversational AI, digital patient engagement, or patient messaging platforms.
• Experience integrating AI capabilities into existing healthcare applications or clinical/operational workflows.
• Experience with AI governance, model risk management, and bias testing.
• Experience managing a combination of full-time, vendor, or offshore engineering teams.

• Epic & Healthcare: Epic systems and workflows, Epic integration concepts, healthcare data, APIs/FHIR, HIPAA, HITECH, and PHI.
• Cloud: Azure App Service, Azure Functions, AKS, Azure API Management, Azure Storage, Azure SQL/Cosmos DB, Key Vault, and Entra ID.
• AI: Azure OpenAI, Azure AI Search, LLMs, RAG, prompt engineering, agent orchestration, vector databases, LLM tracing, and observability.
• Data: SQL, data pipelines, Databricks or Microsoft Fabric, and healthcare data models.
• Engineering: Python, Git, Azure DevOps/GitHub, Terraform/Bicep, Docker, automated testing, APIs, and CI/CD.
• Observability: Azure Monitor, Application Insights, Grafana, or equivalent APM tooling.
• Security & Compliance: HIPAA, HITECH, PHI de-identification, role-based access control, audit logging, and secure application development.
