Job description

SwitchGear Engineer

Location: Cumming, GA [Open for Remote]

Position Summary

The Switchgear Engineer supports the design, application, procurement, integration, and field execution of low- and medium-voltage switchgear and generator or inverter paralleling equipment used in microgrids, distributed-energy, and critical-power projects. This position works closely with the Switchgear Engineering Manager, Development Engineering, Estimation, Project Delivery, Procurement, Controls, OEM partners, and field teams to deliver technically sound, constructible, code-compliant, and commercially responsible solutions.

Engineering Execution & Design Support

  • Support the design and application of low- and medium-voltage switchgear systems for microgrids, distributed generation, BESS, solar, generators, EV charging, and industrial power projects.
  • Interpret electrical single-line and three-line diagrams, site plans, equipment schedules, specifications, and 60%, 90%, and 100% design packages to identify equipment requirements and design implications.
  • Configure and quote switchgear packages, including switchboards, switchgear lineups, panelboards, circuit breakers, fused disconnects, transformers, protective relays, metering, controls, and associated accessories.
  • Develop and maintain bills of material, equipment schedules, procurement scopes, technical clarifications, submittals, and vendor drawing review comments.
  • Prepare or support technical deliverables, equipment selections, design reviews, and constructability assessments in accordance with project requirements and internal standards.
  • Apply the NEC, NFPA, IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, utility requirements, customer standards, and applicable local codes to equipment selection and design reviews.

OEM Coordination & Technical Integration

  • Coordinate with OEMs, contract manufacturers, suppliers, and internal procurement teams to confirm equipment availability, lead times, technical compliance, and delivery milestones.
  • Support vendor meetings, technical clarifications, equipment-order reviews, factory acceptance testing, site walks, and installation-readiness reviews.
  • Review OEM quotations, submittals, shop drawings, wiring information, and technical documentation for alignment with project requirements.
  • Coordinate switchgear interfaces with generators, BESS, solar PV, ATS equipment, paralleling controls, microgrid controls, communications, and utility interconnections.
  • Identify technical risks, design gaps, and potential changes early and communicate recommended actions to the engineering, procurement, project, and commercial teams.

Project Support & Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Collaborate with Development Engineering, Estimation, Project Management, Construction, Controls, Sales, Procurement, suppliers, and customers to support project pursuits and execution.
  • Provide technical input for estimates, equipment selection, procurement takeoffs, proposal development, basis-of-design narratives, and project reviews.
  • Provide technical support during construction, installation, startup, commissioning, and closeout; resolve field questions and identify required change-order or punch-list materials.
  • Communicate project status, decisions, risks, technical clarifications, and required actions in a timely and professional manner.
  • Maintain accurate project, procurement, equipment, and delivery information in applicable project-management, warehouse-management, and business systems.

Standardization & Continuous Improvement

  • Support implementation of switchgear standards, specifications, design templates, equipment libraries, review checklists, and supplier interfaces.
  • Identify opportunities for design optimization, modularization, repeatable solutions, value engineering, and improved installation efficiency.
  • Capture lessons learned from suppliers, construction, commissioning, and service activities and apply them to future designs and processes.
  • Support the development of pre-engineered switchgear and microgrid solutions that improve speed, consistency, quality, and project predictability.
  • Share technical knowledge with junior engineers, designers, and cross-functional project team members.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline; equivalent practical experience may be considered for Engineer II candidates.
  • Engineer I: foundational understanding of three-phase power systems, breakers, transformers, relays, switchgear, and electrical drawings, with the ability to learn standards and tools.
  • Engineer II: typically 3 or more years of relevant experience with electrical distribution equipment, switchgear applications, industrial power systems, microgrids, EPC projects, or electrical contracting.
  • Ability to read and interpret single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, site plans, specifications, and equipment submittals.
  • Working proficiency with AutoCAD or similar design and drafting tools; familiarity with SKM, ETAP, Revit, or power-system analysis tools is beneficial.
  • Ability to learn and use OEM configuration and quoting platforms such as Empower, BidMan, Compass SE Advantage, or comparable manufacturer tools.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and the ability to manage multiple fast-moving projects with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Willingness and ability to travel for site walks, supplier meetings, factory testing, commissioning, and installation support.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with Square D or other major LV/MV switchgear manufacturers and associated configuration, quoting, or submittal processes.
  • Hands-on installation, commissioning, service, or field troubleshooting experience with switchgear or electrical distribution systems.
  • Experience integrating generators, BESS, solar PV, EV charging, ATS equipment, paralleling controls, microgrid controls, or utility interconnections.
  • Journeyman or Master Electrician license, NETA certification, EIT or PE license, or eligibility to obtain an applicable license or certification.
  • Experience working with electrical contractors, OEM contract manufacturers, utilities, owners, or EPC project teams.
