Role Overview

The Techno-Functional Workday Architect serves as a bridge between HR business stakeholders and technical delivery teams, owning end-to-end solution design across Workday HCM and Integrations. This role combines deep functional knowledge with hands-on technical capability to design scalable, compliant, and efficient enterprise solutions.

Internal Context: This team resides in Systems and is comprised of about 10 Workday developers. While having overall functional knowledge of HR is beneficial to support technical requirements, the current focus for this role is heavily skewed towards integration development (approximately 75% or higher integration work versus configuring HCM modules).

Key Responsibilities & Outcomes

Functional Configuration

  • Lead solution design across Core HCM, Compensation, Benefits, Absence, Recruiting, Talent, and Payroll modules.
  • Partner with HR teams to translate business requirements into scalable Workday configurations.
  • Conduct impact assessments for releases, enhancements, and regulatory changes.
  • Own governance frameworks for access, role rationalization, and audit readiness.
  • Follow SDLC framework for enhancements and projects.

Integration Architecture & Delivery

  • Design, develop, and support inbound/outbound integrations using: Workday Studio, EIB (Enterprise Interface Builder), Core Connectors, Workday Web Services (REST/SOAP APIs), BIRT reporting, XML, XSLT transformations.
  • Lead integration lifecycle management: requirements mapping build test deploy post-production support.
  • Troubleshoot integration failures and optimize performance.
  • Oversee vendor integrations (e.g., payroll providers, benefits vendors, ServiceNow, background check vendors).
  • Implement secure authentication protocols (SFTP, OAuth, certificates, API security).

Program & Stakeholder Management

  • Lead cross-functional workshops and discovery sessions.
  • Translate BRDs into user stories and technical design documentation.
  • Provide executive-level updates on roadmap, risk, and integration stability.
  • Mentor junior analysts, integration developers, and functional configurators.
  • Drive release management strategy and regression testing coordination.
  • Maintain detailed documentation related to project work, HR Systems internal documentation & frameworks, and process guides.

Qualifications & Requirements

Required:

  • Resume Constraint: Resumes MUST be 3 pages or less (Required by Client).
  • 5+ years of Workday integration experience (Studio, EIB, APIs).
  • 5+ years of Workday experience in HCM (Human Capital Management) configuration and/or security.
  • Experience with Workday Payroll Integrations.
  • Experience supporting or leading full lifecycle Workday implementations or major tenant refreshes.
  • Experience operating in regulated or compliance-driven environments.
  • Strong understanding of data governance and security best practices.
  • Ability to jump right in and handle everything from support to enhancement projects.
  • Excellent communication skills (Communication is KEY).
