Materials Engineer

Location: Knoxville, TN (on-site)
Direct Hire

Position Summary

The Materials Engineer provides technical expertise and engineering support for materials testing and characterization activities, with a focus on material analysis, laboratory testing, data interpretation, and process improvement. This position reviews and interprets technical data, prepares customer reports, performs laboratory measurements, supports troubleshooting and product development efforts, and provides technical guidance to internal personnel and customers.

The Materials Engineer also supports laboratory quality and accreditation requirements, conducts applied research, develops technical content and presentations, mentors laboratory personnel, and assists in identifying opportunities to expand testing capabilities and service offerings.


Essential Functions

Materials Engineering and Technical Support

  • Provide materials engineering expertise, technical guidance, and troubleshooting support related to materials testing and characterization services.
  • Perform and support material analysis activities and interpret test results.
  • Analyze technical data and provide recommendations based on findings.
  • Assist with technical problem-solving, process improvements, and product development initiatives.
  • Support internal teams and customers with technical inquiries and application-specific guidance.
  • Identify opportunities to improve or expand testing methodologies, processes, and services.

Customer Support and Reporting

  • Prepare, review, and provide technical interpretation of test reports and findings.
  • Perform laboratory measurements and testing activities in accordance with established procedures and quality requirements.
  • Provide technical troubleshooting and measurement assistance to customers.
  • Support customer inquiries and evaluate testing applications and requirements.
  • Deliver technical presentations, training, and educational materials as needed.

Laboratory Support

  • Provide technical mentoring, training, and guidance to laboratory personnel.
  • Support knowledge transfer and staff development related to testing methods, equipment, and data interpretation.
  • Assist laboratory personnel with technical questions, testing challenges, and interpretation of results.
  • Promote adherence to laboratory procedures and quality standards.

Quality and Compliance

  • Support laboratory quality systems and accreditation requirements.
  • Assist with activities related to quality management systems and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Develop, review, and maintain technical procedures, documentation, and quality records.
  • Ensure testing and technical activities comply with applicable standards, specifications, and customer requirements.

Research, Development, and Technical Communications

  • Conduct applied research related to materials testing, characterization methods, and customer applications.
  • Develop technical documentation, application notes, and training materials.
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations to internal and external audiences.
  • Perform technical studies and investigations as assigned.
  • Support the development of new products, testing methods, and service offerings.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • None.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor''s degree in Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related engineering or technical discipline.
  • Experience in materials engineering, materials testing, laboratory operations, manufacturing, or a related technical field.
  • Knowledge of materials characterization techniques and testing methods.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and communicate technical data and results.
  • Ability to read and understand technical drawings, specifications, procedures, and work instructions.
  • Ability to conduct technical research and prepare professional reports and presentations.
  • Experience using precision measurement equipment such as calipers, micrometers, depth gauges, and similar instruments.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, written, and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two or more years of experience in materials engineering, materials testing, laboratory operations, or a related technical field.
  • Experience working in manufacturing, engineering, quality, or laboratory environments.
  • Familiarity with advanced materials characterization and testing techniques.
  • Experience with laboratory quality systems and accreditation standards.
  • Experience with quality management systems and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Familiarity with ERP, laboratory information management, or quality software systems.
  • Additional education or training in materials science, metallurgy, testing, or related disciplines.
  • Experience developing technical documentation, research findings, application notes, or presentations.
  • Experience training, mentoring, or coaching technical personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot technical and testing-related issues and develop effective solutions.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent use of computers and standard office equipment.
  • Ability to use laboratory instruments and precision measurement equipment.
  • Ability to lift and move materials or equipment as required.
  • May require standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, or climbing for extended periods.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to perform technical analysis with accuracy.

Work Environment

This position is performed in a combination of office and laboratory environments. Regular interaction with customers, coworkers, and technical personnel is expected through verbal, written, and electronic communication. Work may involve exposure to laboratory equipment, testing activities, and manufacturing-related environments. Employees are expected to follow all applicable safety procedures and use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
