Job Description

Payments Engineer – Java

London – Hybrid (1 day per week onsite)

Are you a hands-on Java Engineer who enjoys building high-performance, distributed systems where resilience, scalability and correctness really matter?

This is an opportunity to work at the heart of real-time payments infrastructure, helping to deliver mission-critical platforms used by some of the world's largest financial institutions.

We're hiring on behalf of a leading payments consultancy that designs and delivers event-driven payment platforms for Tier 1 banks across the UK and internationally.

You'll join a highly skilled engineering team responsible for building and enhancing low-latency, event-driven payment systems capable of processing millions of transactions every day.

Working as a senior individual contributor, you'll collaborate with architects, engineers and client teams to design and deliver robust, scalable software that powers real-time payment processing.

Responsibilities

  1. Design and develop high-performance Java applications for real-time payment processing.
  2. Build scalable, event-driven microservices using modern Java technologies.
  3. Develop asynchronous, message-driven systems with a strong focus on resilience and performance.
  4. Design clean, maintainable APIs and distributed system architectures.
  5. Work closely with architects, product teams and client stakeholders to deliver complex technical solutions.
  6. Contribute to technical design discussions, code reviews and engineering best practices.
  7. Operate within Agile (Scrum/Kanban) delivery teams.

What We're Looking For

You'll be someone who enjoys solving complex engineering problems and building highly resilient distributed systems.

We're particularly interested in engineers with:

  1. Strong commercial experience developing applications with Java 11+ (ideally Java 17+).
  2. Experience building scalable Spring Boot microservices.
  3. Strong experience/understanding of payments.
  4. Commercial experience with event-driven architectures and messaging technologies such as Kafka, JMS or Akka.
  5. Experience with TDD/BDD and modern CI/CD practices.
  6. Experience working with NoSQL databases, ideally MongoDB.

What's On Offer

  1. £70,000 - £115,000 basic salary (DOE)
  2. 20% annual bonus
  3. Hybrid working (1 day per week in London)
  4. Opportunity to work on business-critical payment platforms used globally.
  5. Exposure to Tier 1 banking clients and large-scale payment networks.
  6. Engineering-led culture where technical excellence and innovation are genuinely valued.
  7. Excellent long-term career progression within a growing payments consultancy.

If you're passionate about building resilient, high-performance Java applications and want to work on technology that underpins real-time payments at global scale, we'd love to hear from you. Apply today to find out more.
