Position Overview:
The SUE Technician II at JBPro will independently performs utility records research, surface-feature investigation, geophysical designating, and test-hole support to collect reliable subsurface utility information. This role works with limited day-to-day supervision, produces complete field documentation, and may coordinate a small crew or work zone while escalating unusual conditions to senior staff.
What You’ll Do:
- Review utility records, as-builts, survey data, and engineering plans before fieldwork; identify gaps and request clarification.
- Locate and designate utilities using electromagnetic locators, GPR, sondes, sewer cameras, probe rods, and other appropriate geophysical methods.
- Support or perform vacuum excavation and test holes.
- Mark utilities in accordance with applicable color codes and project requirements.
- Collect positions, depths, photographs, sketches, and field attributes for deliverables.
- Set up and maintain safe work zones and maintenance of traffic under approved plans and procedures.
- Perform daily inspections and routine maintenance of vehicles, trailers, vacuum equipment, locating instruments, hand tools, and safety equipment.
- Coordinate courteously with clients, contractors, property owners, utility representatives, and survey/project staff; promptly communicate hazards, access issues, conflicts, and scope changes.
- Assist newer technicians with safe equipment use, field documentation, and basic locating practices.
- Three to five years of SUE, private utility locating, utility construction, surveying, or closely related field experience.
- High school diploma or GED
- Working knowledge of underground utility systems, utility records, engineering plans, and standard utility color codes.
- Hands-on skill with electromagnetic locating equipment.
- Ability to prepare complete, legible field notes, sketches, photographs, measurements, and electronic records.
- Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to work independently on routine and moderately complex assignments and exercise sound judgment when records and field evidence conflict.
- Familiarity with ASCE 38 quality levels and the distinction between records research, surface-feature survey, geophysical designation, and physical exposure.
Preferred:
- Experience with GPR and vacuum excavation is strongly preferred based on level of experience.
- Direct SUE or multi-utility private locating experience is preferred.
- Technical, surveying, engineering technology, construction, or geospatial coursework is a plus.
- OSHA 10, Maintenance of Traffic/Temporary Traffic Control, First Aid/CPR, confined-space, competent-person, or vacuum-excavation training is preferred; ability to obtain assigned certifications after hire is required.
