Job description

Fairness feels good

Make a real impact at AFCA. Where fairness drives every decision. Help us deliver world-class, independent complaints resolution for Australians. As a not-for-profit and progressive financial ombudsman, we’re championing positive change. Achieving our purpose takes progressive thinking, accountability and resilience. At AFCA, our inclusive leadership values every voice. We offer our people flexible work options, thoughtful benefits and opportunities to deepen expertise. Flourish in a diverse, caring culture. Feel the difference of belonging to an organisation intentionally designed to put people first.

From 31 March 2027, consumers and small businesses will be able to bring eligible scam complaints to AFCA under the Scams Prevention Framework following an internal dispute resolution process.

Lead complex technology delivery, bring teams together and turn strategy into outcomes that make a difference.

At AFCA, technology plays an important role in helping us deliver fair, independent and effective dispute resolution for Australian consumers and small businesses.

We’re looking for an experienced Release Train Engineer (RTE) to lead end-to-end delivery across complex technology-enabled programs and value streams. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who can bring structure to complexity, connect business and technology teams, and keep delivery moving in a fast-paced and regulated environment.

The role

As our Release Train Engineer, you’ll take ownership of delivery across multiple teams and workstreams, ensuring initiatives stay focused on measurable customer and business outcomes.

You’ll sit at the intersection of business, technology, experience design and delivery, helping teams manage dependencies, remove impediments and adopt effective Agile and SAFe practices.

Importantly, this isn’t just about running ceremonies. You’ll be a delivery leader and change agent who can move comfortably between strategic conversations with senior stakeholders and hands-on execution with delivery teams.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll:

  • Lead end-to-end delivery of complex, technology-enabled initiatives and value streams.
  • Facilitate key Agile Release Train events including PI Planning, Scrum of Scrums, Product Owner Syncs and System Demos.
  • Establish and lead SAFe delivery structures aligned with enterprise governance and risk requirements.
  • Translate organisational strategy and customer experience objectives into clear delivery plans, roadmaps and outcomes.
  • Coordinate delivery across business analysis, technology and process design, build, testing and implementation.
  • Manage complex dependencies, risks and impediments across multiple teams and workstreams.
  • Bring together internal technology and operational teams, vendors, system integrators and other delivery partners.
  • Provide clear reporting and delivery assurance to senior stakeholders and governance forums.
  • Coach Scrum Masters, Product Owners, delivery teams and stakeholders in Lean-Agile and SAFe practices.
  • Support teams to continuously improve how they work and deliver value.
  • Act as a change agent, helping people adopt new capabilities, technology and ways of working.

We’re looking for an experienced technology delivery leader who combines strong Agile capability with a pragmatic, outcome-focused mindset.

You’ll bring:

  • 10+ years’ experience leading complex technology-enabled projects and programs.
  • Strong experience in enterprise delivery and transformation, beyond traditional project management.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering through Agile and SAFe at scale.
  • Proven Scrum Master experience, including facilitating multi-team or program-level events.
  • Strong hands-on delivery leadership and the ability to move between strategic oversight and execution.
  • Experience working across blended delivery models involving internal teams, system integrators, outsourced or offshore partners.
  • Strong risk, dependency and impediment management capability.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, including influencing senior leaders and navigating complex stakeholder groups.
  • The ability to coach and enable teams rather than simply direct them.
  • Familiarity with Agile delivery tools including Jira, Confluence and Miro.
  • A clear communication style and the ability to simplify complexity and build trust across business and technology teams.
  • Resilience and adaptability, with the ability to remain calm and focused in high-change environments.
  • Gold AWEI Accreditation 2025 – Recognised for LGBTQ+ workplace inclusion.
  • Accredited Family Friendly Workplace – Supporting work-life balance and inclusivity.
  • Hybrid working – Flexible arrangements with two days a week in our modern offices designed for collaboration and wellbeing.
  • Additional and inclusive leave options – Flexible public holidays, gender affirmation leave, women’s health leave, and bonus paid time off over the end of year holiday period.

To apply

If you’re passionate about fairness and believe your skills align with this role, we encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet every single criterion.

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, cultures, abilities, sexual orientations, and gender identities. If you require any accessibility support during the recruitment process, please reach out to our team at Careers@afca.org.au.

We believe fairness starts with people. That’s why we don’t use AI or automated tools to screen candidates. As a result, our processes may take a little longer, and we thank you for your patience.
