JOB DESCRIPTION
Responsible for the utilization and balancing of press and saw teams to ensure efficient shift productivity with full adherence and emphasis on safety and quality. Must communicate well with the press crew, schedulers, and all other plant personnel.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- The duties and responsibilities of the Team Lead are detailed below, but not limited to the following:
- Responsible for optimization of the press and working with the team to ensure an efficient and productive shift.
- Equally responsible for maximizing productivity at the saw and stretch, including optimization of saw operation, following work orders closely, and constantly communicating with the saw team.
- Ensure that all product exiting the press and saw adheres to Almag’s quality standards.
- Take the initiative to assign roles to team members at start of shift.
- Responsible for ensuring all team crews are up to speed in terms of training – work with General Manager to ensure team members understand all aspects of the role.
- Work closely and continuously while in constant communication with the shift supervisor, maintenance, die shop, quality and scheduling teams to resolve any issues and discrepancies
- Rotate individuals on press, and set break and/or lunch schedules as necessary to ensure a continuous operation.
- Ensure die change operators are following the schedule and being proactive about die setups throughout the shift.
- Ensure all EPICS entries are being done correctly by the press and saw teams including billet lengths, cut offs, cut sizes, etc., and highlight any special notes and instructions that the team needs to focus on.
- Ensure all notes are being put into EPICS related to downtime, die fails, quality issues, and schedule adherence.
- Ensure all quality checks are completed and recorded at the required frequency at the press and saw.
- Review product scans and ensure material meets specifications.
- Take ownership of NCRs and quality issues with the press team to arrive at a solution, and document best practices to avoid the issue from occurring again in the future.
- Ensure saw team is packing skids securely and all material coming off the saw is cleaned, free of defects and is good quality product adhering to our quality standards.
- Ensure operators are conducting quality checks for visual & dimensional requirements as well as according to control plans or test inspection procedures.
- Ensure any material that is out of spec is either scrapped or rectified. If material needs to be kept for QA approval or subsequent re-work, ensure it is properly tagged with a red tag.
- Ensure compliance with all quality related policies, procedures and system requirements.
- Participate in accident/incident investigation processes & complete corrective actions with Shift Supervisor as required.
- Circulate constantly throughout the line (press, saw and stretcher) and ensure all 3 are functioning optimally.
- Escalate issues with the maintenance team immediately for any mechanical related downtime. Work in a collaborative team to come up with timely solutions.
- Issue maintenance work orders as required to formalize the process and ensure correct follow ups are done.
- Act as the primary point of contact regarding 5S and ensuring the line is clean and tidy throughout the shift.
- Communicate any deviations from the schedule to the shift supervisor and discuss ways to optimize adhering to the schedule using a collaborative approach.
- Ensure materials (billets, skids, separators, etc.) are available at press for duration of the shift.
- Be proactive in communicating with forklift drivers when materials are required.
- Verify alloys when changing logs with forklift drivers and ensure they are correctly delivered.
- Responsible for setting up the next shift for success by ensuring smooth continuation of production through cleanliness, schedule adherence, material preparation, and communication of any non-conformances.
- Review metrics at end of shift (shift report) and ensure all downtime and comments and breakdown of downtime is put into EPICS.
- Discuss any prevalent mechanical issues with following shift, and ensure enough materials are available.

HEALTH & SAFETY
- Observes all legislative requirements of the Occupational Safety & Health Act;
- Provide a workplace free from serious recognized hazards and comply with standards, rules and regulations issued under the OSH Act.
- Examine workplace conditions to make sure they conform to applicable OSHA standards.
- Make sure employees have and use safe tools and equipment and properly maintain this equipment.
- Use color codes, posters, labels, or signs to warn employees of potential hazards.
- Establish or update operating procedures and communicate them so that employees follow safety and health requirements.
- Provide safety training in a language and vocabulary workers can understand.
- For hazardous chemicals in the workplace, ensure the development and implementation of a hazard communication program and ensure employees are trained on the hazards they are exposed to and proper precautions (and a copy of safety data sheets must be readily available).
- Train new employees and retrains employees as required;
- Participates in accident/incident investigation process;
- Conduct safety talks with employees;
- Ensures proper orientation is conducted for permanent and temporary staff;
- Assist in creating modified jobs when required;
- Ensures the department is kept clean, orderly and safe at all times;
- Ensure employees shall be authorized official time to participate in the activities provided for in section 19 of the Act, Executive Order 12196, this part, and the agency occupational safety and health program.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience
- Minimum High school Diploma
- Some Post-secondary education in a technical field is an asset
- 3-5 years’ production experience in an industrial environment
- Minimum 1 year of experience in a team leadership role
- Extrusion experience is an asset.
Technical Skills/Competence
- Microsoft Office proficiency, specifically Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel.
- Must have good team-building and motivational skills.
- Good command of English, written and oral.
- Ability to think outside the box.
- Understanding of measurements, tolerances, basic geometry, and numeracy comprehension.
- The ability to read blueprints is an asset.
- Familiarity with extrusion software such as EPICS is an asset.

The expected hourly rate for this position is $24.50 Actual compensation will be determined based on factors including, but not limited to, skills, experience, qualifications, internal equity, and business needs.
