Job Description
Own the mechanical design behind vacuums and floor care products used in millions of homes. This Mechanical/Product Design Engineer, New Product Development (NPD) role sits with a well known British brand rebuilding new product development, in the West Midlands, working in a small team that designs, builds and tests in quick loops rather than waiting for a perfect brief. Why this might beat the job you have now:
The design calls on floor care, from vacuums to battery systems, are yours to own, with growing independence rather than sign off from above.
You are joining while new product development is being rebuilt, working in quick design, build and test loops instead of a perfect brief.
What you design ships into millions of homes. This is real production volume, not a low run concept.
Get in early on a rebuild and grow with it, without five people senior to you queued for the next step.
Role at a glance
Permanent role, on site four days a week, exact office location shared once we are talking
Based in the West Midlands, commutable from Birmingham, Worcester and the wider region
Occasional travel for supplier and manufacturing visits, including work with production teams overseas
Reports into the Head of Engineering, inside a New Product Development function still forming
What you will own
As Mechanical/Product Design Engineer, NPD, you own dry floor care design end to end, from concept CAD to production.
CAD of complex parts and assemblies in CREO, SolidWorks, Inventor, Onshape or Fusion
Tolerance stack ups, FEA and failure analysis that decide if a design ships
Design for manufacture calls across materials, heat treatments and manufacturing processes
Drawing specifications that hold up for function and manufacture, not just intent
Contact with production teams overseas as designs move toward build
What you will need
As Mechanical/Product Design Engineer, or Mechanical Design Engineer, you will need:
A proven background in electromechanical design, spanning airflow, motors, filtration, cordless or battery power
Strong 3D CAD skills across complex parts and assemblies, with tolerance stack ups and DFM
A track record of taking mechanical designs through to production, not concept stage only
Handy but not essential: vacuum experience, CREO, and overseas manufacturing exposure
Salary and benefits
Salary shared directly with applicants, not published on this one
Company bonus up to 10%, plus pension at 5% employee and 3% employer
25 days holiday plus bank holidays, with an option to buy three more
Private medical through Aviva after six months, plus standard protection cover
Cycle to work scheme, a free product after probation, and group wide discount codes
About the company
This is a well known British home appliance brand, part of a larger international group, investing in engineering after several quieter years. New product development is being rebuilt, with a mandate to work faster and closer to the product. A Mechanical/Product Design Engineer joining now gets in before the rebuild is set in its ways.
If this Mechanical/Product Design Engineer, NPD role beats the job you are in now, message me with what you are working on. I will tell you straight if it is worth a conversation, no CV needed.
