Temporary Field Operations Engineer - 6 Month Duration
Day Rate: £161 - £173 (£42k - £45k equiv)
Hours: 40 per week
Base: Croydon
Travel: Nationwide (regular & reactive travel to client sites required)
We're recruiting a highly capable Field Operations Engineer for a 6-month assignment supporting technical deployments and on-site IT operations across multiple UK locations. This is a hands-on, field-based role ideal for someone who thrives on variety, problem-solving and delivering robust infrastructure solutions in fast-moving environments.
The Role
You'll be the technical backbone of field operations-deploying, maintaining, and optimising IT infrastructure across sites nationwide. Working closely with network engineers, contractors, and local teams, you'll ensure equipment is installed correctly, systems stay stable, and users receive high-quality support.
Key Responsibilities
- Deploy, install, and maintain IT and network infrastructure across multiple locations, including switches, firewalls, servers, structured cabling and workstation environments.
- Rack, cable, configure and troubleshoot network and endpoint hardware, ensuring secure, reliable, and high-performing services.
- Support firewall implementations, switch deployments, network connectivity and workstation rollouts in collaboration with network engineers and project teams.
- Monitor, maintain and upgrade infrastructure including LAN/WAN networks, wireless solutions, PDUs, UPS systems, cooling equipment and communications cabinets.
- Provide hands-on technical support for desktops, laptops, printers, scanners, biometric devices, kiosks, mobile devices and other business-critical technology.
- Manage operating system installations, security patching, user accounts, permissions, endpoint management and surveillance systems.
- Travel to sites across the UK (and occasionally internationally) to support infrastructure deployments, upgrades, maintenance and technical projects.
- Manage the procurement, inventory, and lifecycle of IT infrastructure and end-user equipment, ensuring accurate asset records and timely delivery.
- Coordinate with vendors, contractors and service providers to ensure installations, maintenance activities and projects meet required specifications and standards.
- Participate in audits, identify risks, escalate incidents appropriately and contribute to continuous improvement of infrastructure and support services.
Required Skills & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or equivalent technical training.
- 2+ years' experience in IT infrastructure, field engineering, network support or similar technical roles.
- Strong hands-on experience with switch, firewall, server and workstation deployments.
- Proven experience installing, cabling and troubleshooting network infrastructure within enterprise or multi-site environments.
- Working knowledge of Layer 2/Layer 3 networking concepts, VLANs, TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS and network security principles.
- Experience with network switches and firewalls (Cisco, Aruba, Fortinet, Sophos, Meraki or similar).
- VMware or other virtualisation platform experience (required).
- Microsoft Active Directory administration experience (required).
- Knowledge of Linux (RHEL/Debian), Windows Server, Windows 11, macOS, PowerShell and Bash scripting.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities.
- Comfortable working independently across multiple locations and within international, multicultural environments.
