About the Role:
The Insurance AR Manager leads a high-performing, scalable Insurance Accounts Receivable function focused on protecting revenue through timely claim resolution, denial management, financial reconciliation, and operational excellence. This role oversees Insurance AR Specialists, Leads, and an Assistant Manager, sets clear performance expectations, and ensures outstanding insurance balances are resolved in accordance with payer requirements and company standards.
As both a strategic and working leader, the Manager uses AR, denial, payment, quality, and productivity data to prioritize work, remove barriers, improve processes, and drive performance across people, workflows, technology, and payer relationships. Partnering closely with Revenue Cycle leadership and cross-functional teams, they help reduce denials, improve cash flow, mitigate payer risks, and strengthen internal and provider communication.
The Manager is responsible for building and continuously improving a scalable operating model through workforce planning, standardized workflows, leadership development, automation, quality controls, and performance reporting. Success is measured by increased revenue recovery, operational efficiency, team performance, compliance, and a consistent provider experience.
- Lead the Insurance AR function, ensuring timely, accurate, and compliant resolution of outstanding insurance balances while achieving departmental goals for aging, denials, cash recovery, productivity, quality, and operational performance.
- Establish and monitor key performance metrics, using AR, denial, payer, staffing, and financial data to identify risks, prioritize resources, and drive strategic decision-making.
- Oversee resolution of complex AR issues, including escalated denials, payer disputes, underpayments, recoupments, reimbursement variances, and aging claim inventories.
- Ensure effective processes for claim follow-up, corrected claims, appeals, reconsiderations, payer communication, supporting documentation, and filing deadline management.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives through workflow optimization, automation, technology utilization, reporting enhancements, and scalable operational practices.
- Conduct root-cause analysis of recurring denials, payment delays, workflow breakdowns, and payer-related issues, implementing corrective actions that improve financial and operational outcomes.
- Develop staffing, capacity planning, and escalation frameworks that support organizational growth, operational efficiency, accountability, and effective issue resolution.
- Maintain expertise in payer reimbursement requirements, regulatory standards, and industry best practices to ensure compliant and effective AR operations.
- Hire, develop, coach, and manage Insurance AR team members, fostering accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and high performance.
- Prepare and present operational and financial performance reports to Revenue Cycle and senior leadership, highlighting trends, risks, opportunities, staffing needs, and improvement outcomes.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or a related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Five or more years of progressive healthcare revenue cycle, insurance billing, reimbursement, collections, or accounts receivable experience, including complex AR and denial management.
- Three or more years of leadership experience managing healthcare revenue cycle teams; experience leading remote or hybrid teams preferred.
- Demonstrated success building and scaling operations through workforce planning, performance management, workflow standardization, cross-training, process improvement, and change management.
- Strong knowledge of healthcare reimbursement and revenue cycle operations, including commercial, Medicare, Medicaid, and managed care claims; claim adjudication; denials and appeals; timely filing; authorizations; eligibility; coordination of benefits; payment posting; reconciliations; recoupments; and underpayment analysis.
- Advanced proficiency with EHR/practice management systems, payer portals, clearinghouse tools, Microsoft Excel, and operational reporting; AdvancedMD experience preferred.
- Proven ability to analyze operational and financial data to assess performance, identify root causes, evaluate risk, forecast capacity, and drive improvement initiatives.
- Strong leadership, coaching, and team-development skills with a demonstrated ability to build accountability, engagement, and high performance.
- Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex financial and payer-related information for diverse audiences.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy, professionalism, and sound judgment.
