Junior DevOps - Government

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced DevOps Engineer to join a public sector-focused organisation supporting critical digital services. This role is ideal for someone who can operate independently, take ownership of cloud infrastructure, and work closely with technical and non-technical stakeholders in a mature delivery environment.

As the sole DevOps specialist within the team, you will play a key role in maintaining, improving, and supporting a well-established AWS-based platform. The successful candidate will be comfortable working within existing frameworks, processes, and tooling while driving operational excellence and platform reliability.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and optimise AWS cloud infrastructure and services.
• Support and maintain containerised workloads using ECS Fargate and ECS on EC2.
• Develop, maintain, and improve CI/CD pipelines using GitLab CI.
• Implement Infrastructure as Code and automation best practices.
• Monitor system performance, security, reliability, and availability.
• Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure and deployment issues.
• Collaborate with delivery teams and communicate technical solutions to a range of stakeholders.
• Take ownership of DevOps operations and provide expert guidance across the platform.

Essential Skills & Experience

• Strong commercial experience working with AWS cloud services.
• Hands-on experience with ECS Fargate and/or ECS on EC2.
• Proven experience designing and managing CI/CD pipelines using GitLab CI.
• Ability to operate independently and take ownership of platform support and improvement.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code, automation, and configuration management tools.
• Strong understanding of cloud networking, security, and monitoring.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
• Experience working in structured environments with established governance and delivery frameworks.

Desirable Skills

• Public sector or government project experience.
• Experience supporting highly available, production-critical platforms.
• Knowledge of Terraform, Ansible, Packer, or similar automation tools.
• Understanding of containerisation and cloud-native application delivery practices.
