Job Description

Title: Senior .Net Azure Developer

Location: Grand Rapids, MI Remote

Job Type Contract & Fulltime

What to prioritize:

  • Strong C#/.NET 6+ and ASP.NET Core development experience.
  • Hands-on production experience with Apache Kafka, including producers/consumers, partitioning, schemas, consumer scaling, and failure handling.
  • Experience with Temporal or a comparable workflow orchestration platform such as Camunda, AWS Step Functions, or Cadence.
  • Strong Microsoft Azure experience, particularly building and operating microservices using AKS/Kubernetes, Azure Functions, Service Bus, and Event Hubs.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems concepts, including idempotency, eventual consistency, retries/backoff, event sourcing, and the outbox pattern.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, and automated testing.
  • Ability to diagnose complex production issues across distributed services.
  • Strong communication skills and experience working with product and architecture stakeholders in an ecommerce/retail environment.

Position Overview

  • Design and build resilient, event-driven services powering an ecommerce and omnichannel fulfillment platform, including Ship-to-Store and related initiatives. This hands-on engineering role focuses on solving complex distributed-systems challenges involving ordering guarantees, workflow durability, fault tolerance, and high-scale retail environments.
  • The role works primarily with .NET, building microservices that communicate through Kafka and orchestrating long-running business processes using Temporal, with services deployed on Microsoft Azure.

What You'll Do / Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services using .NET/C# and ASP.NET Core for order management, inventory, and fulfillment workflows.
  • Model and implement long-running, stateful business processes, including order-to-fulfillment and ship-to-store routing, using Temporal.
  • Ensure workflow durability, retries, and compensation logic are handled correctly.
  • Produce and consume events using Apache Kafka and design topics, partitioning strategies, and schemas that support high-throughput, low-latency processing.
  • Architect and deploy services on Microsoft Azure using technologies including AKS, Azure Functions, Service Bus, Event Hubs, and API Management.
  • Follow cloud-native and infrastructure-as-code practices.
  • Write clean, well-tested, and maintainable code.
  • Participate actively in code reviews, design reviews, and architectural decisions.
  • Diagnose and resolve production issues across distributed services, including message ordering, idempotency, and eventual-consistency edge cases.
  • Collaborate with Product Owners, architects, and QA to translate business requirements into robust technical designs.
  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, observability, and overall engineering best practices.
  • Mentor mid-level and junior developers and help raise the technical bar across the team.
  • Evaluate and prototype emerging technologies, including applied AI/LLM capabilities, where they can improve the platform or developer workflow.

Required Qualifications

  • 6+ years of professional software development experience with strong depth in .NET/C#, including ASP.NET Core and .NET 6+.
  • Hands-on production experience with Apache Kafka, including producers and consumers, schema registry, partitioning, consumer group scaling, and failure-handling patterns.
  • Practical experience with Temporal or comparable workflow orchestration engines, such as Camunda, AWS Step Functions, or Cadence, for durable execution of long-running business processes.
  • Strong experience building and operating microservices on Microsoft Azure, including AKS/Kubernetes, Azure Functions, Service Bus, and Event Hubs.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems concepts, including idempotency, eventual consistency, retries/backoff, event sourcing, and the outbox pattern.
  • Experience with relational and NoSQL data stores, including SQL Server or PostgreSQL, Cosmos DB, and Redis.
  • Proficiency with containerization using Docker and Kubernetes-based deployment.
  • Strong testing discipline, including unit, integration, and contract testing in a microservices environment.
  • Experience with CI/CD tooling, such as Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or similar tools, and infrastructure-as-code using Terraform or Bicep.
  • Excellent communication skills and comfort working directly with product and architecture stakeholders in an ecommerce/retail context.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
