Platform Engineering Team Lead

London | Hybrid | 100,000+

I’m working with a global fintech business looking for a Platform Engineering Team Lead to take ownership of a talented seven-person engineering team and help shape the next stage of its cloud platform.

This is a genuinely hands-on leadership role. You’ll work across GCP, Kubernetes/GKE and Infrastructure as Code, helping scale an established, high-availability payments platform while leading platform engineering for a new AI-driven decisioning product.

The opportunity

The business is investing heavily in evolving its Platform Engineering capability, with a particular focus on Developer Experience, self-service and treating the platform as a product.

You’ll have the opportunity to:

• Lead, mentor and develop a distributed team of 7 Platform Engineers, with scope for further growth
• Remain technically involved across GCP, Kubernetes/GKE and Terraform
• Lead platform engineering work supporting a new AI decisioning platform
• Help scale an established global payments platform where security, resilience and availability are critical
• Shape architecture and challenge technical decisions
• Drive greater automation, self-service and Infrastructure as Code
• Improve Developer Experience and make it easier for software engineers to build and deploy
• Influence the longer-term direction of the Platform Engineering function

Technical credibility is key - you will need strong experience across:

• Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
• Kubernetes
• Terraform / Infrastructure as Code
• Designing and operating secure, highly available production environments
• Platform Engineering, DevOps, SRE or Cloud Infrastructure
• Technical leadership, mentoring or supporting other engineers

Experience within payments, fintech or financial services would be valuable, particularly where you’ve worked with highly available or security-critical systems, but it isn’t essential.

You also don’t need to be a long-established Engineering Manager.

This could be an excellent move for a Senior, Staff or Principal Platform Engineer who is already the person others turn to for technical direction and mentoring, and now wants to take genuine ownership of a team while remaining close to the technology.
