I'm working with a Tier One proprietary trading firm in Sydney that's hiring an SRE to own their production trading environment.

This is a hands-on production role, sitting close to the trading desk. You'll be responsible for the performance, reliability and operability of large-scale trading systems and exchange connectivity. That means monitoring and troubleshooting live systems, and building and maintaining the operational toolkit around them: configuration management, process management, deployment, monitoring, and data collection and analysis.

You'll work directly with traders to communicate changes, manage incidents and resolve problems in real time. You'll also work alongside Risk Management, Operational Trading Support and Clearing, coordinating production changes, assessing their operational risk, and reconciling trade and position breaks. There's scope to mentor and cross-train other SREs on the team, and to define how production runs.

Full relocation and visa sponsorship are available for the right candidate. The firm is particularly interested in hearing from Australian expats looking to come home, and from anyone with a genuine reason to settle in Sydney.

What they're looking for:

5+ years in an operations-focused engineering role such as SRE, DevOps, Linux Systems Engineering or Network Engineering. Strong Python and shell scripting, with at least 3 years of hands-on use.

Deep Linux knowledge, including kernel internals, scheduling, network and system configuration, and performance tuning. Solid networking fundamentals: routing, multicast, VLAN tagging, LLDP and Ethernet. C++ familiarity is useful but not required.

Above all, they want someone rigorous and detail-oriented who takes genuine ownership of production and responds with urgency when it matters. The role includes shared on-call, so reliable availability is essential.

This role won't suit engineers whose experience is mainly cloud-native or managed platforms, consultants, contractors or anyone with a run of short tenures. It suits people who have run real production Linux systems where latency, uptime and correctness had direct consequences. Trading-firm, exchange or market-data experience is a strong advantage.
