Job Description

Role: Principal Investigator / Senior Research Scientist
Company: Arch Systems
Client: U.S. Federal Government
Location: Remote
Type: Full-time

Position Overview

Arch Systems is seeking a highly qualified Principal Investigator (PI) / Senior Research Scientist to lead advanced R&D in bandwidth-efficient decentralized radar sensing and cooperative target inference.

The PI will lead the development of algorithms that enable three or more radar nodes to cooperatively detect and identify targets while operating under constrained communications, synchronization, latency, and edge-compute resources.

Key Responsibilities

The PI will:

  • Define advanced radar and communications models.
  • Lead research in pulse-Doppler/range-Doppler processing, distributed detection, Automatic Target Recognition (ATR), synchronization-aware sensing, decentralized estimation/fusion, and cross-layer resource allocation.
  • Formulate mathematical performance objectives and evaluation criteria.
  • Design modeling and simulation (M&S) experiments and establish quantitative performance baselines.
  • Guide the transition from software Proof of Concept (PoC) to Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) and representative radar environments.
  • Provide technical leadership and effectively communicate research findings, methodologies, and results during Government technical reviews.

Mandatory Qualifications

Candidates must meet all of the following requirements to be considered:

  • Ph.D. is mandatory in Electrical Engineering, Signal Processing, Radar, Communications, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Prior experience working on U.S. Federal Government projects is mandatory.
  • Minimum 8+ years of relevant R&D experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in radar signal processing and distributed/networked sensing.
  • Strong technical background in Bayesian estimation, sensor fusion, synchronization, information theory, and/or constrained wireless communications.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB and/or Python-based radar modeling and simulation (M&S).

Highly Desired Qualifications

  • Peer-reviewed publications and/or patents related to radar, sensing, communications, signal processing, or related technologies.
  • Prior Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) experience.
  • Previous radar R&D experience supporting organizations such as NRL, ONR, AFRL, ARL, DARPA, or other DoD/Federal research programs.
  • Experience transitioning advanced research concepts from mathematical models and simulation into experimental, HIL, or representative radar environments.
  • Working knowledge of AI/ML techniques applicable to modern ATR and task-oriented edge inference.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is an accomplished radar scientist and research leader who can move fluently across radar phenomenology and mathematics → distributed algorithms → communications constraints → simulation and experimentation → Government technical review.

The candidate should combine deep radar and distributed-sensing expertise with sufficient AI/ML knowledge to lead modern ATR and task-oriented edge-inference research.

Important: A Ph.D. and prior U.S. Federal Government project experience are mandatory requirements for this position. Candidates who do not meet both requirements will not be considered.
