PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
We are seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Finance Process Documentation Consultant to help document and analyze complex financial data and operational processes. Working across multiple business functions, you will develop a clear understanding of how critical financial data is sourced, transformed, managed, and consumed throughout the organization.
Work Location: Remote, aligned to Pacific Time.
Duration: 3-month contract for the initial phase, with potential for future phases
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ROLE
- Map and document complex end-to-end finance and business processes across multiple functional teams.
- Conduct stakeholder interviews to understand current workflows, ownership, dependencies, controls, and decision-making processes.
- Trace data from source systems through downstream processes and outputs, documenting key inputs, transformations, business rules, and handoffs.
- Review existing SQL scripts, spreadsheets, lookups, matching logic, and manual data processes to understand how information is processed and utilized.
- Identify undocumented procedures, process dependencies, knowledge gaps, and operational risks.
- Create detailed written documentation and process maps that clearly communicate current-state workflows.
- Develop user-friendly process narratives, workflows, and visual process diagrams using tools such as Lucidchart, and Google Workspace.
- Surface process inefficiencies, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
- Deliver documentation that can be leveraged by future business, technical, or automation teams to support transformation initiatives.
- Partner with finance, operations, and business stakeholders to establish a comprehensive current-state view of critical business processes.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS
- Strong understanding of finance, accounting, business operations, or enterprise systems.
- Demonstrated experience documenting complex finance business processes and translating stakeholder knowledge into clear written and visual deliverables.
- Ability to read and understand SQL queries and data transformations to identify source data, logic, and outputs.
- Experience creating or modifying SQL is a plus, but not required.
- Proficiency working with spreadsheets, data analysis, lookups, and data transformation logic.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to trace data across multiple systems and processes.
- Experience developing process maps, workflow diagrams, standard operating procedures, or current-state assessments.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to synthesize large volumes of information into organized, actionable documentation.
- Consulting mindset with the ability to work independently in an evolving environment.
- Prior experience supporting process improvement, transformation, governance, or automation initiatives is highly desirable.
