Role Description

Arcadis is seeking a Civil or Environmental Engineer, Geologist, or Scientist to join our established, multi-disciplinary team in our Clifton Park, New York office. This is an entry-level or early career opportunity for a motivated individual looking for career growth in the environmental consulting field. While this position requires both field and office work, the candidate should expect to spend 70% to 95% of their time in the field, with the potential option to shift to more office-based work over time.

As part of our Environmental Services team, you’ll help improve quality of life. This full-time position will be based out of our Clifton Park, NY office and requires a person who is self-motivated and dedicated to contributing to our success. Above the educational preferences, attention to detail, a strong work ethic, excellent written and verbal communication skills, willingness to take initiative, ability to work independently and collaboratively in groups, and willingness to perform field work are crucial characteristics of a successful consultant.

Effective coordination and communication with project managers and other staff is a must. Being able to take direction while thinking critically and creatively to guide projects to completion is also vital for success and professional growth. The successful candidate will be working alongside and supporting task managers, technical experts, and project managers on multiple remediation, long-term monitoring, and operations and maintenance projects. Arcadis’ performance-based evaluations provide an opportunity for candidates to advance their career within the company.

Role accountabilities:

Responsibilities will include a combination of data/sample collection, site operational support, and remedial system operations and maintenance through field activities, as well as supporting client deliverables and field work planning in the office. As Arcadis supports projects throughout the Northeast and the United States, there may be significant opportunities for travel.

Fieldwork will be a key aspect of this position, which will offer you an opportunity to be trained to oversee drilling for soil sampling and groundwater well installation, groundwater sampling, subcontractor oversight, operation and maintenance of remediation systems, vapor intrusion/soil gas surveys, among other tasks. It is essential to conduct fieldwork with a focus on health and safety.

Your core duties will include:

  • Conducting project related research (reviewing historical data, applicable regulations, etc.)
  • Writing technical reports, health & safety plans, work plans, letters, and other forms of written correspondence
  • Complete office work including data compilation and interpretation, regulatory file reviews, and task planning/coordination with vendors, laboratories, contractors, and coworkers.
  • Soil, groundwater, surface water, sediment, and air sampling in compliance with State and Federal standards
  • Oversight of contractors (e.g., excavation, construction)
  • Oversight, implementation, operation, maintenance and monitoring of field pilot tests and remedial systems for various remediation technologies which may includeOperation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of remedial systems and conducting field tests (hydraulic, air flow/vacuum, geotechnical, etc.)

This is by no means a comprehensive list, as you grow your career you may have the opportunity to get involved with these or other initiatives and opportunities throughout our global organization.

While this position requires both field and office work, the candidate should expect to spend 70% to 95% of their time in the field, with some travel requiring hotel stays. Candidates must have a good driving record and be willing to work outside in all weather conditions and for extended periods. Staff are expected to regularly work 9- to 12-hour field days and document the work in writing while in the field or in the evening each day. Candidates must also be able to meet the physical demands associated with performing field work, including lifting heavy equipment, working in a standing position for extended periods of time, working alone at remote sites, etc. While some field work involves the need for effective collaboration with small and large groups of coworkers, subcontractors, and clients, many days involve independent work with minimal face to face contact with coworkers.

Field work may be performed at project sites with environmental media (e.g., soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water, etc.) that has been impacted with hazardous substances and/or hazardous wastes. However, Arcadis provides substantial Health and Safety training, support and mentoring for all project activities, and promotes a strong safety culture where employee and public safety comes first. Candidates should be proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word, and must hold a current, valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
