Senior Network Engineer

Mandatory Qualifications

• 7+ years hands-on experience as a Senior Network Engineer + Cisco Optical Network Solutions (ONS).

Knowledge:

• Cisco Catalyst route/switch
• Cisco Nexus route/switch
• Cisco ASR routing
• BGP
  • IBG
  • EBGP
• Serve as senior escalation point for complex enterprise networking issues; mentor and guide junior engineers.
• Implement and operate core services across routing/switching, wireless LAN, WAN/MAN, firewalls, load balancers, IPAM, and optical systems.
• Provide packet capture support and analysis of traffic flows.
• Drive network automation and standardization (configuration templates, network-as-code, centralized management) to improve reliability and speed of delivery.
• Provide Cisco ONS engineering support:
  • Work with Cisco TAC to troubleshoot and rectify ONS issues.
  • Travel to CUNY’s NYC locations to swap out ONS hardware.
  • Install new ONS hardware including cabling.
• Fiber cabling:
  • Provide troubleshooting support.
  • Cleaning of cables.
  • Replacing of cables.
• Perform structured root cause analysis for recurring or high-impact incidents and recommend corrective actions to improve reliability.
• Develop and maintain automation using tools such as Ansible, Terraform, Puppet, Python, Bash, PowerShell, GitHub/Git, or similar platforms.
• Build repeatable automation workflows for configuration backup, compliance checks, drift detection, device validation, provisioning, and low-risk network changes.
• Ideal candidate may be asked to participate in the development of a phased Network-as-Code approach, including source-of-truth alignment, configuration validation, peer review, automated testing, and controlled deployment.
• Ideal candidate may be asked to work closely with DevOps, DevSecOps, security, cloud, systems, and application teams to integrate network automation into broader enterprise workflows.
• Intermediate skills in Cisco and Meraki Wi-Fi technologies is required.
• Strong understanding of routing, switching, IP subnetting is desired with solid understanding of TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, switching, subnetting, BGP, OSPF/EIGRP, DNS, DHCP, NAT, VPN, wireless, datacenter technologies, and firewall concepts.
• Candidate may be asked to perform field replacements of failed equipment on the ONS based optical networking.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Day-to-day operation needs for Cisco technologies including ONS, Catalyst, Nexus, ASR, and WiFi solutions Aironet, and Meraki.
• LAN, WAN, and cloud connections.
• Developing MOPs, submitting changes in ServiceNow, and implementing changes.
• Troubleshooting, trouble isolation, and trouble correction.
• Occasional field services across CUNY sites in the 5 boroughs to replace failed modules on ONS platform.
• Incident responses, and trouble ticket management including ticket closure.
• Network level support to campus IT, and infrastructure teams.
• Managing TAC support with vendor and circuit repairs with carriers.
• Responding to network incidents and network priorities as determined by CUNY.
• This role has onsite requirements.
