Job description

Overview

The EHS Specialist owns environmental, health, and safety compliance for The Goodkind Co.'s manufacturing operations. The primary focus of this role is managing our state and federal environmental compliance obligations end to end: maintaining permits and registrations, keeping the required logs and records, collecting and submitting required samples and data, and filing accurate reports on time with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and local authorities. The role also administers our occupational safety program, including OSHA recordkeeping, hazard communication, and employee training.

This is a hands-on, individual-contributor role with facility-wide reach. The EHS Specialist works on the production floor and in the warehouse as much as at a desk, partnering with Production, Process Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, and HR to make sure compliance is built into how we operate rather than checked after the fact. The ideal candidate has done this work before at a manufacturing site, knows which agency wants which report and when, and keeps records that would stand up to an inspection we did not know was coming.

This role reports to the Senior Director of Quality.

About Us

Founded in 2010 and based in the Austin area, Goodkind is a leading manufacturer of clean personal care and beauty products. Goodkind specializes in deodorant, skincare, and facial care products. The company has extensive experience in formulation and manufacturing and can develop products according to a variety of standards and guidelines, from consumer organizations such as Ecocert and EWG to retailers such as Target and Sephora.

Goodkind is a B Corporation. As such, we balance purpose and profit, considering the impact of decisions across associates, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment. Goodkind believes that this multi-stakeholder approach creates optimal value for each stakeholder while leaving the world a better place.

Key Responsibilities

Environmental Compliance: Permits, Logging, and Reporting

  • Serve as the facility's primary point of contact and subject-matter owner for environmental compliance with TCEQ, EPA, and local authorities, including inspections, information requests, and agency correspondence.
  • Maintain the facility's environmental permit and registration inventory, including the industrial wastewater discharge (pretreatment) permit, air authorizations (permits by rule or standard permits as applicable), stormwater coverage under the TPDES Multi-Sector General Permit, and hazardous waste generator registrations. Track renewal dates, conditions, and limits, and lead renewals and modifications well ahead of deadlines.
  • Own the compliance calendar: know every required log, sample, inspection, and report, its frequency, its due date, and the agency it goes to, and ensure nothing is missed.
  • Manage industrial wastewater compliance, including sampling schedules, chain of custody with the contract lab, review of lab results against permit limits, and preparation and submission of Discharge Monitoring Reports and any required exceedance notifications. Investigate exceedances to root cause and drive corrective actions with Production and Process Engineering.
  • Manage hazardous, non-hazardous, universal, and used-oil waste programs: waste determinations and profiling, container labeling and accumulation-area inspections, manifests (e-Manifest), generator status tracking against monthly accumulation thresholds, and annual waste reporting to TCEQ.
  • Prepare and submit recurring regulatory reports, including Tier II hazardous chemical inventory reports (EPCRA Section 312), Toxics Release Inventory (EPCRA Section 313) where thresholds are met, air emissions inventories, and any other reports required by permit or regulation.
  • Maintain the Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) plan if applicable, the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP), and the facility's emergency response and contingency plans, and conduct and document the inspections each plan requires.
  • Keep complete, organized, inspection-ready records for every environmental program, including logs, sample results, manifests, training records, inspection checklists, and agency submittals, with retention periods met.
  • Evaluate new raw materials, products, processes, and equipment for environmental impact and permit implications before they are introduced, and advise on what registrations or permit changes they trigger.

Health and Safety Program

  • Administer OSHA injury and illness recordkeeping, including the OSHA 300 Log, 300A annual summary and posting, 301 incident reports, and electronic submission through the Injury Tracking Application where required.
  • Maintain the written Hazard Communication program, including SDS management, GHS labeling, and chemical inventory alignment with Tier II reporting.
  • Lead incident and near-miss investigations, root-cause analysis, and corrective-action tracking to closure.
  • Conduct routine safety walks, job hazard analyses, and audits of PPE use, lockout/tagout, machine guarding, forklift operation, hot-process areas, and chemical handling, and partner with floor leadership to close findings.
  • Coordinate industrial hygiene monitoring (noise, air, ergonomic) as needed and maintain results.
  • Maintain emergency preparedness: evacuation plans, drills, first-aid and eyewash station inspections, and fire-safety coordination with the local fire marshal.

Training, Culture, and Continuous Improvement

  • Develop and deliver EHS training for new hires and annual refreshers, including hazard communication, RCRA/hazardous waste handling, spill response, PPE, and DOT hazmat awareness where applicable, and maintain training records.
  • Track and report EHS metrics (recordable rate, near misses, waste volumes, permit compliance status) to operations leadership monthly.
  • Support quality, client, and certification audits (for example ISO 22716 and B Corp) on EHS-related requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce waste, water use, and emissions, and support Goodkind's environmental commitments as a B Corporation.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

What You'll Need

  • 3+ years of hands-on EHS experience at a manufacturing site, with direct responsibility for environmental permits, logs, and agency reporting. Experience in cosmetics, personal care, chemical, food/beverage, or pharmaceutical manufacturing is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing and submitting environmental reports to state and federal agencies, including at least several of: Discharge Monitoring Reports, Tier II, TRI, air emissions inventories, hazardous waste annual reports, and e-Manifest. Texas and TCEQ experience is a strong plus.
  • Working knowledge of the regulations behind those reports: RCRA hazardous waste (40 CFR 260-273 and Texas 30 TAC 335), the Clean Water Act industrial pretreatment program, EPCRA, Clean Air Act permitting for minor sources, SPCC (40 CFR 112), and stormwater (TPDES MSGP).
  • Working knowledge of OSHA general industry standards (29 CFR 1910), including recordkeeping (Part 1904), Hazard Communication, lockout/tagout, PPE, and powered industrial trucks.
  • Experience managing contract labs, waste haulers, and environmental consultants, and reviewing their work critically.
  • Exceptional organization and attention to detail: this role lives and dies by complete records and met deadlines.
  • Ability to read a permit or regulation, determine exactly what it requires of our facility, and turn that into a procedure, a log, or a checklist that floor teams can follow.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, comfortable with regulators, executives, and production operators alike.
  • Self-starter who works independently with minimal supervision and raises issues early.
  • Comfortable on a manufacturing floor and able to traverse the facility, climb ladders, and lift up to 25 pounds. Must be able to respond on short notice to spills, agency inspections, or incidents.
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, occupational safety, chemistry, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Preferred certifications: 40-hour HAZWOPER (or 24-hour with current refresher), RCRA/DOT hazmat training, OSHA 30-Hour General Industry. ASP, CSP, CHMM, or REM is a plus.
  • Competitive salary
  • 3 weeks Paid Time Off annually
  • 11 paid holidays annually
  • Medical, Vision, and Dental 100% paid by the company
  • 401k with company match
  • Paid parental leave
