Senior Observability Engineer/SRE Consultant - Contract

Up to £600 per day - Umbrella engagement

6-month initial contract with scope to extend

Peterborough - 2x days a week

Sanderon recruitment is currently working with a business who require a hands-on contractor to improve production visibility, detect service degradation earlier and accelerate incident triage and root-cause analysis. Strong Splunk experience is essential, Dynatrace and Grafana experience is desirable.

Key responsibilities

• Review telemetry, dashboards, alerts and recent incidents to prioritise improvements.
• Map critical customer journeys and their application, infrastructure and third-party dependencies.
• Strengthen correlation across logs, metrics, traces and deployment events.
• Define service-health measures and actionable alerts, with clear ownership and response guidance.
• Deliver improvements to an agreed initial group of critical services before any wider rollout.
• Validate results through controlled incident exercises and comparisons with historical incidents.
• Document standards and runbooks, sharing knowledge with engineering and operations teams.

Essential experience

• Proven production observability and incident-diagnosis experience.
• Strong hands-on Splunk expertise.
• Distributed-systems troubleshooting and application-performance analysis.
• Experience working with developers to improve instrumentation-not just configure monitoring tools.
• Evidence of measurable improvements in detection, investigation or operational reliability.

Desirable experience

• Dynatrace and Grafana.
• Synthetic monitoring of critical customer journeys.
• Monitoring configuration managed as code.
• Telemetry cost, retention and sampling optimisation.
• Relevant industry and production technology-stack experience.
