Job Description

Job Title: People Data & AI Engineer

Location: Pleasanton CA

Duration: Contract (6-7 Months+)

The Opportunity

Client is building the trusted data foundation behind how a Fortune 500 company understands its workforce — and this role sits at the center of it. You won't be maintaining a legacy reporting pipeline; you'll be architecting the people-data platform that powers analytics, workforce insights, and the company's next wave of AI-enabled HR solutions.

If you want data engineering work with real visibility — where what you build directly shapes how leadership makes decisions about people — this is that role.

What You'll Build
  • Architect the people-data platform — design and maintain scalable data models in the enterprise warehouse that power dashboards, analytics products, and approved AI use cases
  • Own the integration layer between Workday and the broader enterprise data ecosystem — pipelines, APIs, and interfaces that keep critical HR data flowing cleanly
  • Build trust into the system — automated data-quality monitoring, validation rules, and end-to-end lineage so people can see exactly where a number came from and trust it
  • Shape how sensitive data is governed — partner directly with Privacy, Legal, Security, and HR Technology to operationalize real governance, not just policy on paper
Why This Role Is Different
  • Cross-functional by design — you'll work directly with People Analytics leadership, Enterprise Data, HR Technology, Security, and Legal. This isn't a siloed engineering seat.
  • Ground floor on AI enablement — you're building the data foundation that approved AI use cases will run on, not retrofitting AI onto a legacy system
  • Real ownership — this role defines architecture patterns and technical standards for people data across the company, not just executing someone else's spec
What You Bring
  • 5+ years in data engineering, analytics engineering, or data architecture — including production-grade pipelines, data models, and integrations, not just proof-of-concept work
  • Strong SQL and Python, with real experience in data modeling, ETL/ELT, and API integration
  • Comfort with cloud data platforms, version control, and automated testing as standard practice
  • Bachelor's in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or equivalent practical experience
Where You'll Have an Edge
  • Hands-on Workday data experience
  • Background with sensitive-data governance or HR data specifically
  • Experience with Databricks or a comparable cloud data ecosystem
  • Exposure to AI/ML data enablement
  • BI semantic modeling experience
Apply if you're the kind of engineer who:

Builds systems other people trust without having to ask how they work. Cares as much about data lineage and governance as about clever pipelines. Wants their next role to matter beyond the sprint board.
