Job Description

Role Overview
Seeking a Senior Database Architect to lead SQL Server modernization and AWS database architecture. The primary focus is untangling complex SQL Server replication, implementing Multi-AZ / multi-region HA, and preparing the database layer for a future SQL Server Aurora PostgreSQL migration.
Must-Have Experience

  • Deep SQL Server architecture experience SQL Server on EC2 and/or RDS SQL Server
  • SQL Server performance tuning, troubleshooting and database optimization
  • SQL Server AWS Aurora PostgreSQL migration experience
  • Hands-on AWS DMS and Schema Conversion Tool (SCT)
  • Strong T-SQL, stored procedure analysis and database object migration
  • Experience designing Multi-AZ Availability Groups and multi-region SQL Server architectures
  • Terraform / Infrastructure as Code
  • Strong understanding of OLTP/OLAP replication and database-to-application integration

Key Responsibilities

  • Own SQL Server modernization activities for Phase One
  • Analyze and resolve complex OLTP OLAP replication architecture
  • Design and implement Multi-AZ and multi-region SQL Server HA/DR
  • Perform T-SQL and database object assessment for migration
  • Develop migration strategy using AWS DMS/SCT
  • Prepare SQL Server databases for eventual Aurora PostgreSQL migration
  • Work closely with infrastructure, application and data teams on database architecture

Recruiter Screening Checklist
Candidate should be able to answer YES to most/all of these:

  1. SQL Server Architect: Has the candidate architected/modernized SQL Server environments not just administered them?
  2. AWS Database: Hands-on with SQL Server on EC2/RDS and AWS database architecture?
  3. Migration: Has the candidate used DMS/SCT and worked on SQL Server Aurora/PostgreSQL migration?
  4. HA/DR: Experience with Multi-AZ Availability Groups, replication and/or multi-region SQL Server?
  5. Hands-on DB: Strong in T-SQL, stored procedures, performance tuning and DB object migration?

Do NOT prioritize generic Data Architects, BI Architects or Data Engineers unless they have the above hands-on SQL Server/AWS database architecture background.
