Job Description

About SWARCO

At SWARCO, we shape the future of transport. As part of the global SWARCO Group, we develop cutting-edge technologies for intelligent, sustainable, and efficient mobility ecosystems worldwide. From advanced traffic management to cloud-based mobility platforms, our work reduces congestion, enhances safety, and minimises environmental impact. Join our collaborative team, innovating for smarter, greener cities globally.

We're looking for a Trainee Production Tester / Quality Inspector to join our team in Melsonby. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys practical, hands-on work and wants to build a career in engineering, manufacturing and quality assurance.

You'll learn from experienced colleagues, develop valuable technical skills and gain a thorough understanding of how our products are assembled, tested and inspected before reaching our customers.

What you will do

This is a hands-on training role where you'll gradually develop the skills and confidence to test products, identify faults and ensure quality standards are met. You'll be supported throughout your development, with opportunities to take on more responsibility as your knowledge and experience grow.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Learning how to inspect and test electrical, mechanical and electro-mechanical products.

  • Assisting with functional testing and checking products against engineering drawings, specifications and quality standards.

  • Recording test results accurately and maintaining quality documentation and photographs.

  • Learning how to identify faults, defects and quality issues, and supporting experienced colleagues with troubleshooting and repairs.

  • Helping ensure products are correctly labelled, documented and ready for dispatch.

  • Learning to use testing equipment safely and correctly.

  • Supporting production assembly activities, including cable preparation, wiring, connector termination and sub-assembly work.

  • Assisting with PCB assembly and repair tasks where appropriate training has been provided.

  • Following work instructions, quality procedures and Health & Safety requirements.

  • Keeping your work area clean, safe and organised.

  • Sharing ideas and helping identify ways to improve product quality and working processes.

  • Working alongside Production, Engineering and Quality colleagues to build your technical knowledge and experience.

As you progress, you'll develop the skills needed to carry out testing and inspection activities more independently, working towards becoming a fully competent Production Tester / Quality Inspector.

Our values

At SWARCO, our values are at the heart of how we work:

  • Agility – adapting to changing priorities and finding practical solutions.

  • Reliability & Trust – being dependable and doing what we say.

  • Passion – taking pride in our work and the quality we deliver.

  • Innovation – looking for better ways to work and improve our products.

  • Cooperation – working together, sharing knowledge and supporting one another.

If you're looking to start or develop your career in engineering and manufacturing, enjoy hands-on work and want to learn new skills in a supportive team, we'd love to hear from you!

You don't need to know everything on day one. What matters is your enthusiasm, reliability and willingness to learn.

What we offer:

  • 25 days' annual leave plus bank holidays.

  • Your birthday off.

  • Company Pension

  • Access to Perkbox benefits.

  • Opportunities to learn, develop and build your career within SWARCO.

What we are looking for

You don't need to be an experienced tester or quality inspector to apply. We're looking for someone with the right attitude, a willingness to learn and an interest in practical engineering or manufacturing work.

You'll ideally have:

  • Good attention to detail and pride in producing work to a high standard.

  • A willingness to learn new skills and take part in training.

  • The ability to follow instructions and work safely.

  • Good communication skills and a positive, team-focused approach.

  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills.

  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office.

  • The ability to complete paperwork and records accurately.

  • A reliable, organised and proactive approach to work.

  • An interest in engineering, manufacturing, product testing or quality.

Previous experience isn't essential, but it would be helpful if you have:

  • Worked in a manufacturing, production, engineering or quality environment.

  • Used hand tools, power tools or basic testing equipment.

  • Some understanding of engineering drawings, wiring diagrams or technical documentation.

  • Experience with electrical or mechanical assembly.

  • An awareness of quality inspection, Health & Safety, 5S or continuous improvement.

Above all, we're looking for someone who is keen to develop, takes responsibility for their learning and enjoys working with others to get things right.
