In-Home Executive Functioning Tutor
Quick Overview
Job Description
Thrive Education Partners is seeking a warm, experienced High School Learning Specialist / Academic Tutor to provide individualized academic support to a bright student entering 9th grade.
This student is quiet, kind, highly capable, and entering high school with strong intellectual potential. At times, however, his academic performance has not fully reflected his abilities. As coursework becomes more demanding, the goal is to make sure he begins high school with the right strategies, systems, and individualized support to succeed.
This is not simply a homework-help position. We’re looking for an educator who can understand why a capable student may be struggling, identify where learning differences are creating barriers, and explicitly teach the strategies needed to navigate those challenges with increasing independence.
Student Profile
The student is entering 9th grade and is described as quiet, kind, and highly intelligent. He has two identified learning differences, including dysgraphia, that can make it more difficult for his academic output to consistently reflect what he knows and understands.
As he enters high school, one of the biggest priorities is helping him learn how to effectively navigate dysgraphia within a more demanding academic environment. Increased writing expectations, longer assignments, multiple teachers, more complex projects, and greater responsibility for organization and follow-through all create new demands that require strong systems and strategies.
Support will span his high school coursework rather than being limited to one narrow subject. Current priorities include English/ELA, math, reading comprehension, written expression, and executive functioning, with flexibility to support other classes and academic demands as they arise.
The goal is ambitious but straightforward: help a highly capable student perform at a level that more accurately reflects his abilities. The family wants him to begin high school on strong footing, develop effective strategies for navigating his learning differences, and work toward consistently strong academic performance.
What You’ll Do
- Provide individualized academic support across high school coursework, including English/ELA, math, reading comprehension, writing, and other subjects as needed.
- Help the student successfully transition into high school and manage increased expectations for independence, organization, studying, and written work.
- Teach practical strategies for navigating dysgraphia and written-expression demands, including planning, organizing, drafting, and completing assignments.
- Strengthen executive-functioning skills such as organization, time management, prioritization, assignment tracking, task initiation, and follow-through.
- Help the student break down larger assignments and projects, plan ahead for deadlines, and manage multiple classes effectively.
- Teach effective study, note-taking, reading comprehension, and test-preparation strategies.
- Identify whether academic challenges stem from content knowledge, written output, comprehension, executive functioning, or another underlying skill, and adjust support accordingly.
- Build independence by helping the student develop strategies and tools he can increasingly use on his own, while communicating regularly with the family about progress and priorities.
What Makes Someone Successful
- Understands bright students with learning differences. You recognize that strong intellectual ability and academic difficulty can coexist and can identify what is getting in the way of performance.
- Experienced with dysgraphia and executive functioning. You can teach practical strategies for writing, organization, planning, time management, studying, and follow-through.
- Comfortable across high school academics. You can support multiple courses while recognizing when a student needs direct content instruction versus a stronger learning strategy.
- Relational and responsive. You build trust with adolescents and can look beneath a low grade, missing assignment, or difficult test to determine what actually broke down and adjust accordingly.
- Focused on independence and high expectations. You provide meaningful support without lowering the level of challenge, helping students develop strategies they can increasingly use on their own.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant teaching, tutoring, learning support, or academic intervention experience
- Meaningful experience working with middle and/or high school students
- Experience supporting students with learning differences
- Strong understanding of executive-functioning skills and their impact on academic performance
- Experience supporting written expression, writing organization, and/or dysgraphia

- Ability to reliably and consistently provide in-person support at agreed-upon times each week
