Mechanical Design Engineer

MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER THE ROLE<br />Sitting within the design team, this role covers the design, engineering and specification of new products<br />alongside ongoing support of the existing product range, including reviewing products for design optimisation<br />and manufacturability.

Reporting to the Technical Engineering Manager, the successful candidate will produce<br />production ready designs, provide guidance on design for manufacture, and deliver both existing and new<br />product projects to agreed timescales and standards.

ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES<br />• Work closely with the Technical Engineering Manager and the Design and Development department,<br />taking products from concept through to detailed engineering drawings ready for manufacture.<br />• Partner with the Production Engineering department to refine existing designs, reducing cost and<br />improving efficiency while maintaining product quality.<br />• Assess and advise on manufacturing methods for engineering designs, taking into account both in house<br />and external manufacturing capability.<br />• Lead DFMEA activity at the start of each project, tracking completion of identified actions and working<br />with the Development team to identify potential design failure modes.<br />• Apply a solid understanding of both DFMEA and tolerance stack up analysis.<br />• Carry out tolerance analysis throughout the design process to support ease of manufacture and product<br />function, and to prevent tolerance build up issues during manufacture and assembly.<br />• Collaborate across the NPD programme, particularly with Development, Production Engineering and<br />Purchasing, to ensure design for manufacture principles are applied before product handover.<br />• Keep new product progress feedback sheets accurately completed and up to date.

PERSON SPECIFICATION<br />• Degree educated, or able to demonstrate an equivalent engineering background with a strong bias<br />towards mechanical engineering.<br />• A track record of taking products from initial prototype through to mass production.<br />• Essential knowledge and hands on experience of sheet metal manufacturing processes, including folding<br />and welding.<br />• Demonstrated experience of design for manufacture.<br />• Experience producing DFMEA reports and following through on identified actions.<br />• Experience of tolerance stack up analysis and resolving areas of concern.<br />• Proven experience using Solid Edge; candidates with experience of comparable CAD packages will also<br />be considered.<br />• Able to produce 2D production drawings in line with GD&amp;T best practice.<br />• Experience with folding simulation software is desirable but not essential.<br />• Strong written and verbal communication skills.<br />• A genuine commitment to continuous learning and development.<br />• Competent user of Microsoft Office packages.<br />• Strong team working skills.<br />• Comfortable working to defined standards and procedures within an ISO 9001:2015 registered<br />environment.<br />• Organised and structured, with the ability to prioritise workload and use own initiative.
