Job Description

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The Cook is responsible for a number of duties as listed below.  All of the following duties are essential unless otherwise noted: 

 

  1. Prepares or directs the preparation of food items on assigned and scheduled menus.
  2. Adheres to food production and usage schedules and avoids waste.
  3. Appropriately and immediately labels and stores food items/leftovers after use.  Daily assesses all food items in refrigerators to ensure that outdated items are discarded appropriately.
  4. Maintains sanitation of equipment and utensils, and work, storage, and serving areas by cleaning immediately after use.
  5. Prepares, or directs preparation of special items, snacks, or meals.
  6. Prepares or directs preparation of special nourishments or supplements and identifies with the residents name, as instructed by the Food Service Supervisor or Dietitian.
  7. Identifies and corrects safety hazards in the food service areas.
  8. Complies with the established policies, practices, and standards for food preparation.
  9. Logs and records temperatures of food, freezers, refrigerators, and dishwashers as assigned.
  10. Helps set up tables for meal service.
  11. Assists with tray service to residents in the dining area and pick up dishes after meal is served.
  12. Assists with the assembly of, washing of and/or stacking off of dishes and storage of clean dishes in the proper place.
  13. Assists with general cleaning and as needed.
  14. Maintains daily care of dishwasher and dishwashing area, lavatory and sink, salad work table, dish storage cabinet, and food carts. 
  15. Assures that trash cans are cleaned.
  16. Assists with care of floors in kitchen by sweeping and/or mopping at a time when food is not being prepared or served.
  17. Assists in maintaining dry storage areas, handling, unpacking, dating and rotating of food and non-food supplies and notifies the Food Service Supervisor of shortages or discrepancies.
  18. Assures that soiled linens are delivered to laundry.
  19. Advises Food Service Supervisor of any needed changes to the diet cards in a timely manner.
  20. Has ability to reasonably conform to all rules and policies of the facility.
  21. Other duties as assigned.

A Cook must possess the ability to read, write, speak and follow written and oral instructions in English.  High school education or GED is preferred, but not required.  Must be at least 16 years old.  The Cook must have an understanding of mechanical devices and basic sanitation procedures.
