As an Environmental Advisor, you will provide practical environmental support and guidance across underground cabling and overhead electricity works, helping project and site teams deliver works safely, responsibly and in line with environmental legislation, client requirements and Network Plus procedures. The role will involve supporting activities across a range of working environments, including highways, rural fields, agricultural land, private land, areas near watercourses, and environmentally sensitive locations such as Sites of Special Scientific Interest.

You will be responsible for identifying environmental risks and advising on suitable controls during the planning and delivery of construction works. This will include supporting environmental screening, reviewing and assisting with Construction Environmental Control Plans, producing environmental risk assessments, supporting permit and consent applications, and undertaking site inspections to ensure environmental requirements are being met. The role will require close collaboration with operational teams, supervisors, project managers, clients, landowners, regulators and interested parties to ensure works are delivered with minimal environmental impact and in accordance with best practice.

Key Responsibilities


  • Conduct environmental screening for proposed and live construction sites, including works in highways, rural locations, near watercourses and environmentally sensitive areas.
  • Engage with 3rd parties and arrange for surveys and monitoring where required.
  • Review, assist with and support the production of Construction Environmental Control Plans and other project environmental documentation.
  • Produce and maintain environmental risk assessments, identifying key environmental aspects, impacts and suitable control measures.
  • Advise project on environmental risks, controls and best practice throughout the planning and delivery of works.
  • Support the identification, application and management of environmental permits, consents and assents required for construction activities.
  • Communicate with relevant regulators, statutory bodies, clients, landowners and other interested parties where required.
  • Undertake site inspections and audits to ensure works comply with client environmental specifications, legal requirements and Network Plus procedures.
  • Provide advice on environmental protection measures including pollution prevention, watercourse protection, ecology constraints, waste management, spill response, noise, dust, drainage and reinstatement.
  • Support operational teams working around sensitive receptors such as watercourses, protected habitats, agricultural land, public highways, private land and SSSIs.
  • Maintain knowledge of relevant environmental legislation and guidance relating to construction, utilities, excavation, cabling and overhead line works.
  • Promote environmental awareness and good practice across site teams, supervisors and project delivery teams.
  • Assist with environmental incident reporting, investigation, corrective actions and lessons learned where required.
  • Support continuous improvement in environmental performance across projects and contracts.

Experience and Qualifications


  • Degree in a related subject, such as Environmental Science, Environmental Management
  • Strong analytical skills
  • CIRIA, CITB or IEMA Construction Environmental Awareness course.
  • Previous use of MAGIC maps, Flood Maps for Planning, Statutory Main Rivers maps etc
  • Previous experience within the construction industry (ideally within a Principal Contractor)
  • Past work conducting site inspections, audits, and environmental risk assessments.
  • Experience with environmental permitting/consents and assents.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills 
  • IT Literate – Word, PowerPoint, Excel
