Job Description

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks an Applied Signal Processing and AI/ML Engineer to develop advanced algorithms for national security, space, and health missions. In this role, you will design and implement digital signal processing pipelines and machine learning models for complex sensor, radar, RF, acoustic, or imagery data. You will prototype in Python, C++, or MATLAB; analyze large, noisy datasets; and transition research concepts toward operational systems. Working with multidisciplinary experts, you'll tackle challenging real-world problems in a collaborative, mission-driven, and intellectually curious culture with strong support for research, innovation, and professional growth.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement digital signal processing and AI/ML algorithms for complex sensor and communication data
  • Develop, train, and evaluate ML models for detection, classification, and tracking problems
  • Prototype and optimize algorithms in languages such as Python, C++, or MATLABAnalyze large, noisy datasets and develop robust feature extraction and data preprocessing pipelines
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers on national security and space missions
  • Document methods, experiments, and results; present findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Support transition of research prototypes into operational or real-time systems
  • Stay current with advances in AI/ML, signal processing, and high-performance computing

Required Skills

  • Digital signal processing
  • Machine learning model development
  • Deep learning (e.g., CNNs, RNNs, transformers)
  • Python programming
  • C++ or MATLAB programming
  • Statistical data analysis
  • Signal and sensor data modeling (radar/RF/acoustic/imagery)
  • Algorithm optimization and prototyping
  • Version control (e.g., Git)
  • High-performance or GPU-accelerated computing
