Senior Electrical Engineer (Battery Storage)

Support the Senior Grid Manager and VP Delivery in delivering grid connections for the UK Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) portfolio, with additional support to global offshore wind projects as required.

The role focuses on electrical design aspect of the grid connection, plant system design, contractor management, coordination of technical drawings and studies, and ensuring compliance with applicable standards and requirements. The Senior Electrical Engineer will work closely with internal teams including development, construction, and procurement, and interface with external stakeholders such as BOP contractors, BESS OEMs, Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), Transmission Owners (TOs), and technical consultants. Responsibilities include preparing and agreeing project specifications, budgets, and schedules with contractors and clients to support successful project delivery.

Responsibilities

Electrical aspects of Masdar Clean Energy projects and assets

• Work closely with the construction team to deliver the electrical system design and grid integration of the entire project. Ensure the power system design complies with the relevant requirement and standards and the connection agreement. Ensure the requirements are clear to the contractors and internal teams.
• Review design documents, drawings, reports test procedures and results. Be the main point of contact for Electrical Design and manage the interface with the Project Manager and the contractors.
• Liaise with DNO/TO regarding the electrical aspect of the grid connection.

Projects screening and due diligence

• Design the most cost optimized solution for High Voltage stream for various renewable transactions.
• Assist in screening methodology for projects, which are in the DD phase and perform detailed project screening.
• Perform general design review, verify component sizing and calculations and check design proposals

Projects design work

• Conduct the preliminary and concept electrical HV interfacing design work such as substations, overhead transmission lines, MV & EHV Cables, DCS, Remote End Modifications and for other technical or electrical components of PV, Wind, BESS, Waste-to-Energy Projects.
• Liaise with supervisory personnel, contractors, and design professionals to discuss and resolve matters such as work procedures, complaints, and construction problems in regard to the development of detailed designs for various assigned CE projects
• Assist the Project Delivery team for Project planning, Scheduling, Monitoring, Control and Resources Management for Electrical scope in Renewable projects of various nature.
• Provide technical support for the Project Managers for design queries

Preparation of Request for Proposal (RFP) and tender documents

• Prepare and defining the technical requirements for RFP/tender documents for both Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractors, Owners, Engineer and Project Management Consultants.
• Demonstrate basic understanding of international design, codes and standards, procurement, construction with more emphasize in GCC

RFP bid evaluation

• Support in the evaluation relating to technical aspects (electrical / technology) to the agreed Masdar standards and general codes of practice for received bids from Vendors
• Assist in the technical evaluation matrix defining the selection criteria of technical consultants

Evaluation of EPC contracts and Power Purchase Agreements (PPA)

• Review and comment on contractor technical design submissions.
• Provide technical support for the Project Managers for design queries.
• Provide input into HAZOPS and other safety reviews as directed.
• Participate in technical meetings and handle discussions with contractors.
• Review and ensure governance of electrical aspects of the contractor(s) Inspection and Test Plan (ITP) and Commissioning Plan.
• Attend sites when needed to monitor installation providing feedback to Masdar Project Manager.
• Attend manufacturers factory acceptance tests (FAT’s) when required.
• Assist the management of BoP contract activities relating to various electrical aspects such as cabling, substations, transformers, switch yards, over headline and overall grid connections, Substation Control & Monitoring System (SCMS), DCS System, Remote End Modification etc.
• Ensure clear incorporation and definition of all electrical requirements in the contracts with the relevant contractors for the HV electrical operation of any renewable energy projects of Masdar CE

Contracting and supervision of electrical consultants

• Review technical design of drawings and documents during implementation phase.
• Adhere to any applicable Masdar information security policies and procedures and identify and report security incidents and suspected weaknesses to the appropriate point(s) of contact.
• Protect assets under care (e.g. laptops and other devices) and information/credentials against unauthorized access, sharing, and/or damage/loss, in accordance with the Information Classification and Handling Procedure.
• Clear desks of all sensitive material and log off/ lock workstations at the end of the day and when leaving desk for a prolonged period in accordance with Acceptable Usage Policies.
• Ensure not installing, copying, or modifying of any software on Masdar equipment without authorization.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or any other related field
• Master’s Degree in Engineering is an asset
• Chartered Engineer status e.g. (e.g. IET, EUR Ing, PEng) is desirable

Preferred Experience:

• 4 to 7 years of experience in the power generation/distribution/transmission industry.
• Experience in successful delivery of power projects through the various stages of design, execution and commissioning.
• Experience in management and commercial understanding of the UK Grid market with expertise in DNO connections.
• Experience of development and execution of large-scale infrastructure projects.
