Job Description


A rapidly growing organization within the medical stop loss market is seeking a Senior Medical Stop Loss Underwriter to join its underwriting team. This individual will play a key role in evaluating, pricing, and managing both new and renewal business while supporting profitable growth across a broad portfolio of self-funded employer groups.

This position offers the opportunity to work closely with brokers, consultants, TPAs, and internal stakeholders in a highly collaborative environment. The ideal candidate will bring strong stop loss underwriting expertise, a relationship-driven approach, and the ability to balance disciplined risk assessment with growth objectives.


Key Responsibilities
  • Underwrite and price new and renewal medical stop loss opportunities in accordance with company guidelines and profitability objectives.
  • Analyze risk characteristics, claims experience, large claimant activity, and benefit plan designs to determine appropriate pricing and coverage recommendations.
  • Evaluate proposed plan changes and assess their impact on risk exposure and underwriting performance.
  • Manage a profitable book of business while supporting retention, client satisfaction, and growth goals.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers, TPAs, consultants, and distribution partners.
  • Work collaboratively with sales, account management, and leadership teams to develop market strategies and drive business results.
  • Present underwriting recommendations and communicate pricing rationale to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Review and complete RFPs, quote requests, and underwriting analyses within established service standards.
  • Monitor industry trends, competitive conditions, and market dynamics to support strategic underwriting decisions.
  • Participate in broker meetings, client discussions, and business development initiatives.
  • Mentor junior underwriters and contribute to underwriting best practices across the team.
  • Support ongoing process improvements and underwriting initiatives.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Risk Management, Accounting, or a related field preferred.
  • 5+ years of Medical Stop Loss underwriting experience.
  • Strong understanding of self-funded health plans, stop loss products, plan design analysis, and large claim underwriting.
  • Proven experience underwriting both new business and renewals.
  • Experience working directly with brokers, TPAs, consultants, and distribution partners.
  • Strong analytical, decision-making, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to balance growth opportunities with sound underwriting discipline.
  • Excellent communication and relationship management abilities.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
  • Experience with stop loss underwriting systems and rating platforms preferred.
  • Industry designations such as CEBS, HIA, FLMI, or similar are a plus.

Location & Work Arrangement
  • Austin, TX preferred.
  • Hybrid schedule available for candidates located within commuting distance.
  • Flexible remote working arrangements will be considered for experienced Medical Stop Loss underwriters with a strong track record in the industry.
