Senior Surveyor - Substation & Transmission
Position Summary
Cache Valley Electric is seeking an experienced Surveyor to support the construction and development of substation and transmission line projects.
This position is responsible for performing field surveys, establishing project control, completing construction staking, collecting topographic and as-built data, and providing accurate survey information to field and engineering teams throughout the project lifecycle.
The ideal candidate has experience supporting utility, transmission, substation, or other large-scale infrastructure projects and is comfortable working independently in active construction environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish, verify, and maintain horizontal and vertical survey control using applicable project coordinate systems and recognized datums.
- Perform field surveys for substation sites, transmission corridors, access roads, utilities, structures, and other project infrastructure.
- Perform construction staking for substation foundations, equipment pads, fence lines, transmission structures, access roads, and related improvements.
- Survey and stake transmission line centerlines, structure locations, angle points, dead-end structures, and other alignment features.
- Collect accurate topographic data, including elevations, terrain, utilities, drainage features, structures, and existing site conditions.
- Support transmission line plan and profile development through accurate field data collection.
- Collect survey information needed for transmission line clearance, sag/tension, road crossings, utility crossings, and other engineering requirements.
- Locate and document existing poles, transmission structures, utilities, and other infrastructure.
- Support right-of-way and easement activities, including boundary research, staking, mapping, and identification of potential encroachments.
- Translate engineering drawings, plans, coordinates, and specifications into accurate field layouts.
- Provide grading and elevation control, including cut/fill staking and verification.
- Coordinate with Project Managers, Superintendents, Engineers, field crews, utility representatives, and other project stakeholders.
- Identify discrepancies between field conditions and project drawings and communicate issues to project leadership.
- Perform quality-control checks to verify survey accuracy and maintain reliable project control.
- Complete as-built surveys and verify completed installations against design requirements and project tolerances.
- Maintain organized survey records, field notes, control documentation, and project data.
- Process field survey data and support the development of CAD, GIS, as-built, and project closeout documentation.

Preferred Qualifications
- Previous surveying experience on transmission line and/or substation construction projects.
- Experience with utility right-of-way, easement, and boundary surveying.
- Experience with Trimble, Leica, Topcon, or similar survey equipment.
- Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, GIS, or similar survey-processing software.
- Experience with transmission line plan/profile surveys and structure staking.
- Experience supporting high-voltage utility or electrical infrastructure construction.
- Familiarity with State Plane Coordinate Systems, NAVD88, and project-specific coordinate systems.
- Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license or Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT) certification is a plus but not required.
Work Environment & Expectations
- This is a field-focused position supporting active construction projects.
- Work may be performed outdoors in varying terrain and weather conditions.
- The position may require extended periods of walking, standing, and working around active construction equipment.
- Travel and temporary project assignments may be required depending on project location.
- Project schedules may occasionally require overtime or extended hours.
