Penguin Random House is seeking a Junior Designer to join our Berkley team. Supporting the Art Director(s), this role will work on all stages of the book cover creation process from conception through design and pre-press. This is a fantastic opportunity to create book covers for a variety of bestselling commercial fiction titles. 

Specific responsibilities include: 

  • Manage and design multiple front covers and mechanicals. 
  • Support and work closely with the supervising Art Director(s) on various tasks such as research, layouts, and presentations. 
  • Partner and coordinate with other departments (editors, copy editors, production and prepress) 
  • Prepare print ready digital files. 
  • Maintain high production standards, meet deadlines, keep to budgets, and respond thoughtfully to feedback. 
  • Strong layout and typography skills  
  • Proficiency with the MAC environment and the Adobe Suite: Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator 
  • Passionate about book design, typography, color, and trends  
  • Very strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills 
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask and do timely follow-ups in a deadline driven environment 
  • Highly creative thinker who is willing to explore a number of visual possibilities for every book cover, and enjoys problem solving: revisions are an opportunity to grow! 
  • Highly organized and flexible  
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both verbal and written 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel 
  • Minimum of 6 months’ prior design experience, publishing experience a plus 
  • Hand lettering and illustration skills are a plus 
  • Knowledge of printing, prepress file/art management and production are a plus 

The Penguin Random House national headquarters is located in New York City. The position is open to remote candidates based in the United States who can work primarily on Eastern Time. 

The salary for this position is $60,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
