Position Overview

Our client is seeking an Associate Project Manager to support the delivery of major transmission, substation, line construction, and infrastructure projects within its Power Delivery organization. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career Project Manager with 2+ years of project management experience who is looking to take ownership of increasingly complex utility and infrastructure projects. The APM will initially work closely with a Division Project Manager and, within approximately 3-6 months, will be expected to independently manage assigned projects through the full project lifecycle. Projects may range from smaller infrastructure and substation projects to large-scale transmission line and system projects, with typical project values ranging from $2M to $100M and durations from 6 months to 4 years.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in project scope development and project management activities for approved transmission capital, substation, line construction, infrastructure, and occasional transmission line relocation projects.
  • Support projects involving 46 kV and above transmission systems.
  • Lead project solution teams and coordinate with project Cost and Schedule Leads throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Conduct and lead onsite field scoping meetings with project stakeholders.
  • Develop project scopes, requirements, schedules, budgets, and execution plans.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional stakeholders, including:
    • Substation Design
    • Transmission Line Design
    • Protection & Controls
    • Telecom
    • Construction
    • Engineering
    • Maintenance
  • Monitor project progress, costs, schedules, risks, and deliverables.
  • Assist with project estimating, scheduling, procurement, and construction coordination.
  • Transition into independently managing assigned projects after an initial onboarding and development period.
  • Support both smaller infrastructure projects and larger, complex transmission projects, depending on experience and capabilities.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
    • Preferred disciplines include Electrical, Industrial, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 2 years of project management experience in one or more of the following:
    • Transmission
    • Distribution / Power Delivery
    • Utility project management
    • Infrastructure project management
    • Overhead or underground construction projects
  • Demonstrated experience leading project teams and coordinating cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Experience conducting onsite field scoping meetings and leading project scope development.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Teams.
  • Ability and willingness to work onsite in a field/project environment as needed.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with utilities or within the power delivery industry.
  • Experience with SCS TEAMS estimating platform.
  • Experience with Primavera P6 scheduling software.
  • Experience coordinating projects involving:
    • Substation Design
    • Transmission Line Design
    • Protection & Controls
    • Telecom
  • Previous utility design, construction, maintenance, co-op, or internship experience.
  • Experience managing capital projects with budgets ranging from $2M-$100M.

Work Location & Travel
  • Location: Downtown Birmingham, AL
  • Schedule: 4 days per week onsite
  • Travel: Occasional project/site travel required; travel expenses will be covered.
