Senior Software Engineer - Cloud

Nuclera is a venture-backed, founder-driven biotech company headquartered in Cambridge, UK with significant operations in Boston, USA. Our purpose is to improve human health by making proteins accessible to life science researchers around the world. 

In 2024, we launched eProtein Discovery™ - a breakthrough protein expression, characterization, and purification platform, consisting of cloud-based software and a lab-based instrument (with proprietary cartridges and consumables). Since then, we have established a growing installed base in North America, Europe and Asia, receiving numerous awards and customer accolades.

We are looking for an experienced full-stack software engineer to work on our customer-facing cloud and instrument software as well as the internal tools that support our in-house protein screening services. You’ll be involved in the full software development lifecycle, including working closely with biologists and other stakeholders to define use-cases and requirements, translating those requirements into technical designs, implementing those designs in code and writing tests to verify its correctness. No prior knowledge of biology is necessary, but curiosity and an eagerness to learn is critical.

About the role

This role is for you if you:

• Have at least 5 years industry experience as a software engineer.
• Are confident working across backend, frontend, dev-ops and QA.
• Have a product mindset, with a track record of gathering requirements, owning features end to end, and working directly with key stakeholders to deliver the right outcome.
• Are ready to take ownership of code and keep it up-to-date with the latest best-practices.

Essential:

• Java and Python
• REST and Websocket APIs
• A backend web framework (e.g. Micronaut, Spring)
• Google Cloud or an equivalent cloud service provider (e.g. AWS, Azure)
• HTML, CSS and TypeScript or JavaScript
• React or an equivalent frontend technology (e.g. Angular)
• Containerisation (e.g. Docker, Podman)
• Automated testing (e.g. JUnit, Mockito, pytest)
• Automated build and deployment pipelines
• Version control in Git

Desirable:

• Java Reactive Streams
• Asynchronous Python
• PostgreSQL
• Kubernetes, Helm, Flux, Terraform
• Figma, Balsamiq
• GitLab CI
• Claude Code or an equivalent AI coding assistant
• Experience with bioinformatics data processing pipelines
