Principal Java/Bespoke Software Engineer (Developer)

We're seeking an experienced Principal Java/Bespoke Software Engineer to join a high-performing technology team supporting a mission-critical operational platform.

About the Agency

Our client is a large Federal Government agency delivering critical services to Australians. The organisation operates complex enterprise systems and invests heavily in modern technology platforms to support nationally significant operations.

Key Responsibilities

As a Principal Engineer, you'll play a key role in the ongoing support, maintenance and enhancement of a complex enterprise application environment. Working alongside highly skilled developers and subject matter experts, you will contribute to the design, development and operation of business-critical solutions across Java, AWS and Oracle technologies.

• Developing and maintaining enterprise-grade Java applications and integrations
• Designing and implementing scalable cloud-based solutions using AWS
• Supporting Oracle database development, integration and optimisation
• Contributing to DevOps, CI/CD and release management activities
• Producing technical documentation and providing expert technical advice
• Participating in a shared on-call support roster for critical applications

About You

You are a senior software engineering professional with extensive experience delivering complex enterprise solutions in large-scale environments. You enjoy solving challenging technical problems and are comfortable operating as both a hands-on developer and trusted technical adviser.

You will bring:

• Min 8 years Java experience, enterprise design patterns, JPA, Hibernate ORM, JEE an advantage, reactive programming an advantage.
• Java Web service development, SOAP and REST APIs, OpenAPI/XSD Schemas, XML/JSON, Spring/SpringBoot.
• Experience with AWS services such such as EC2, Lambda, API Gateway, S3 and SQS
• Strong Oracle database and PL/SQL capability
• Experience with REST and SOAP integrations, OpenAPI and enterprise messaging
• Working knowledge of Jenkins, Git, Maven and DevOps practices
• Willingness to be 24x7 on-call (rare, approx. once per year).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• MUST HAVE Australian Citizenship and Baseline Security Clearance
