Quick Overview
Job Description
The Propagation Assistant is responsible for the daily care and monitoring of rooted cuttings and seed plugs during the critical propagation stage, including plants held under booms and in germination chambers. This role manages pesticide measurement, distribution, and application across propagation areas, and oversees all fertilizer stations on the property to ensure plants receive accurate and consistent nutrition. Because propagating crops require close, uninterrupted monitoring, this position works a 6-day work week.
• Manage rooted cutting and seed plug production for plants held under booms or in germination chambers, monitoring temperature, humidity, and moisture levels to maintain optimal rooting and germination conditions.
• Adjust boom irrigation cycles and germination chamber settings as crop stage and environmental conditions change.
• Measure and mix pesticides accurately according to label instructions, safety data sheets (SDS), and company protocols.
• Distribute and apply pesticides throughout propagation areas, following integrated pest management (IPM) practices and all label and regulatory requirements.
• Manage all fertilizer injector stations on the property, including monitoring EC/pH levels, calibrating equipment, and ensuring accurate nutrient delivery to all crops.
• Scout propagation and production areas daily for signs of pests, disease, or plant stress, and report findings to the Propagation Manager.
• Maintain accurate, up-to-date records of chemical applications, fertilizer rates, and crop monitoring observations.
• Follow all required safety procedures and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling and applying chemicals.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of propagation areas, chemical storage, and fertilizer stations.
• Assist with other propagation, production, or greenhouse tasks as assigned.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to accurately measure, mix, and apply chemical solutions following label directions.
• Basic math skills for calculating application and dilution rates.
• Comfortable working in a greenhouse environment, including exposure to heat, humidity, and agricultural chemicals.
• Detail-oriented with strong record-keeping habits.
• Able and willing to work a 6-day work week, including Saturdays, particularly during peak propagation season.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work both independently and as part of a team.
• Previous experience in greenhouse propagation, nursery production, or agriculture.
• State pesticide applicator license/certification, or willingness to obtain one.
• Experience operating and maintaining fertilizer injector systems.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
